OT for this thread but still a direct response to your post: today a report came out that the Phillies are expected to bid for Soto, and while that's mostly just "they have money" and/or "some agent whispered it" that doesn't mean it isn't true... or that they aren't going to aggressively consider adding a new OF.

Plus we have no idea if they will actually extend Ranger, or if they should (or if he'd take one).

If they did add a free agent it likely does mean they'd not be on the deadline market, nor trading Crawford. He'd probably move into CF or RF in 2026 by which time Nick will be gone or a DH, and Marsh/Rojas will have not become full-time players (assuming one of them isn't traded in the off-season this year).

Only 20, his swing needs to be adjusted, too many GBs, but 13.9% B and K rateis impressive.

Next season the organization will finally have "real" prospects at Lehigh and Reading, not just 1 or 2 guys.
It's taken 4-5 years to get to this point.

Next step is to keep the talent coming and become a top ten farm system, given the monetary and draft position constraints, hard to see getting much above that point. If you can consistently finish around 10, that should mean enough young talent to defray the big contracts and provide trade bait.

The top of the system really is not any better than it has been in the past decade. Painter got delayed by a year or two because of injury, but outside of that we still will just have a couple of guys in the upper minors (Miller and Crawford).

The system has improved a little bit but the ranking is really mostly driven by Painter not graduating. The back end of our top 10 is still pretty weak compared to other organizations. If we had drafted more college players in general the last few years they would also have graduated. It is not as if guys like Stott and Bohm were non prospects either. They just sped through the system more quickly because they were older when drafted. It has been a long time since we graduated a significant Latin American prospect and its not like we have anybody too close at the moment (even if we have hopes for Caba and Tait).

It is just a top heavy system now also. We are relying on a half dozen guys to make it. There are just not a whole lot of players beyond the top 6-8 that look like really good prospects now. I hope its an improvement over the last decade but it is hard to tell if it is an actual improvement.

We really have not been awful in recent years. Take away the prospect trades and the draft picks forfeited and we have not done the worst job of developing what we have. I just don't see the really deep system that AF does in most of his posts. There is a whole lot of pressure on Painter for instance because beyond him the pitching depth looks really bleak.

To be completely fair, 90+% of the time even good systems are top-heavy. It's really rare to see a system where the #7-#15 players (for example) are mostly projected to be major league contributors rather than replacement level.

Our system has a good top end, and some young guys in the middle who might work out. That's major league average or a bit better. Hope this year's draft picks pan out; that would help drive things forward.

I don’t know how anyone can say the system hasn’t improved. The Top 10 prospects all have a chance to be big league contributors (even excluding Painter):

Miller, Crawford, Caba, Tait, Abel, Nori, Burkholder, Saltiban, Rincon, Rincones - plus they traded for two decent pitching prospects in the middle of the year in Johnson and Chace and they have a few other interesting guys further down the list.

It has been a long time since the bottom part of the Top 10 wasn’t just a bunch of mediocre fringe guys highly unlikely to ever contribute and that wouldn’t sniff the Top 10 in virtually any other org. Certainly it isn’t perfect, and I can’t understand why Sal Agostinelli still has a job given how much money has been wasted internationally over a very long period of time. Can only live on Carlos Ruiz for so long. Nonetheless, Dombrowski has overseen a renaissance of the whole organization - those that complain just seem to want to complain.

Our top guy (Jalvin Arias) was hurt most of the year so not surprised he did not make the list. Best player (Victor Cardoza) was clearly a breakout, but also age 18 so not a good candidate for prospect lists.

Technically he doesn't right? Was replaced, is now a "senior advisor" (though he's still listed above Chung on the website). Some things about the Phillies still haven't entirely changed (Bowa still has his gig too).

I legit wonder, when they do put you out to pasture like that do you remain on salary? Benefits? I'm sure it's still a sweet gig either way.

To get out of the weeds a second, by my manual checking the guy they signed in 2023 is the second highest ranked top 100 prospect in that class in baseball behind Leodalis De Vries who was considered an elite prospect and far and away the best in the class.

It is a down class, especially with Arias's injury, but memories are very short (not to mention the 2023 class included Tait and Pan as well)
