Post-season Prospect Lists

A guy who's getting overlooked is Irvin, who seems completely back from his TJ surgery.
He had 24 starts and pitched 151 innings between Clearwater and Reading.
Wouldn't surprise me if he made a move next year, could jump ahead of El Garcia based on physical maturity and polish.

He's not even in MILB's top 30 but he's been throwing 90-93 which is all a LH SP with command and secondary pitches needs.
Eventually Romero and some others might pass him, but if I was betting on the first LH SP to hit Philly, it would be Irvin.

He's not being overlooked...he's essentially not doing enough to be looked at.

His numbers don't really jump out and he's fairly old for his level.

He's on a good collegiate path, reaching Reading at age 23. He didn't excel at Reading, giving up way too many HR. I think back to Reading in April, barring a great ST. His BB rate has been marching upward as he goes to higher levels, but is still good. The K-rate is ok, not great.

I think Cole Irvin is very underrated. He reminds me of Randy Wolf. I think he has a chance to be in Philadelphia next September. He simply knows how to pitch.

He's definitely a big leaguer, but he needs a couple more things to click to become a good starter in the majors. I really like his curve- that in a little bump in velo could make him a pretty good lefty out of the pen.

He'll be 24 in January, Reading is a tough first time stop for pitchers, but it's great training for the CBP.
Any mistake in Reading is liable to leave the ballpark, so if you master Reading, moving up to Lehigh shouldn't be a big deal.
I think he still has potential for a little uptick in velocity as he gets further from surgery and fills out a little more.
Nothing major, but a crafty lefty doesn't need to blow people away, just consistently locate his pitches.

Romero is the guy that reminds me of Wolf, not Irvin. Romero is more similar to Wolf physically (shorter at 6'0", good all around athletes) and stuff-wise. Irvin is taller. Less swing and miss stuff and older relative to levels. Irvin is closer to a Leibrandt type for me with a little more velocity. Romero throws a bit harder than Wolf too, though I guess everybody throws a couple mph harder than prospects 20 years ago so that might not mean too much.

Good chat. The unknown pitcher that Ben Badler was high on was one of the new signees (Victor Vargas). $525K guy from Colombia who already has a pretty good idea of how to pitch. He will hopefully go directly to GCL next year. He picked Muzziotti as a breakout candidate as well.

Leibrandt throwing 91-92 would already be in Philly!
Irvin may not have Romero's upside, but he's more polished and could make a push by August.

A friend of mine sent me a pirated copy of the rankings. Moniak was ranked #9 but the ranking seemed almost pretty backhanded. They basically had nothing good to say about him.

Not ranking Haseley is the surprise to me. Recent high number one choice (who played fairly well) is not top 10? That seems an indictment on his status.

Being the optimist, I assume that Haseley falling out of the top ten is an indication of the strength of the system.

Or they really love smallish middle infielders. I really like Gamboa, but not more than Ortiz. I thought Brito's year with the bat was a bit disappointing and wouldn't rank him above Haseley.

I like both of those guys and I do discount full season performances (especially at Lakewood) somewhat when the players are really young. It is just hard to see extremely high projections from them. I think Brito could be a slightly better defensive version of Cesar Hernandez. Gamboa is a bit better than that since SS is so important defensively. But the risk of them getting there compared to Haseley being an above average OF (not a star but think .280 with 20 HRs and decent corner defense) is just immense.

Yeah, they overrate LA IFs on a regular basis.
Even if you're a plus fielder like Galvis, you have to put up .750+ OPS to have real value, without power that's hard, .280/.350/.380/.730.
You really need at least gap power, that is, ISO > .150 and good plate discipline.
I'm not sure any of our LA IF prospects is the next Altuve.

The note on Haseley is pretty illuminating...

Let’s get something out of the way quickly: Haseley would’ve made almost any other top ten, and being the eleventh or twelfth-best prospect in this system is no shame. Literally everyone on this top ten is in the 101 discussion. ...Don’t get too worked up here, because Haseley could just as easily have been sixth or seventh here...

I like their list a lot. Howard, Ortiz, and Alfaro, who are all difficult placements, are just about right in my opinion.

MLB is starting to post some prospect lists. Positions this week. Sixto is the 10th ranked right-handed pitching prospect.

Also the all-defensive prospect list has JP at SS.

The video at the twitter link has a much better Crawford defensive play (it is the second one on the video)
