I fixed Squire's post - sort of. If you select the numbered list, then apply the "preformatted text" tool (the "< / >" in the toolbar), it preserves your content - at the expense of using a mono-spaced typeface. I'll look into whether I can improve the appearance of that...I might be able to figure out how to make the background the same as the rest of the post, and choose a nicer typeface.

EDIT: Another option (see Squire's post now) is to enter something (apparently, anything!) in the line just above the numbered list. I added "Phillies"and now it displays correctly. Who knew?

ESPN Keith Law top 100 list being published this week also. 100-51 today.

-59 JoJo Romero (Law really, really likes him more than anyone else)

Have to imagine Crawford, Sanchez and Kingery will be in the top 50 and Medina and Haseley missed. Of course this means we have 8 guys who arguably are top 100-125 in baseball. And not even including our 1-1 pick Moniak.

There are some that believe Medina may be in the top 50 as well...I thought Law liked him a lot as well.

I had the exact same reaction. I don't think we ever considered Senzel but we definitely considered Puk and Lewis.

I bet the Phillies themselves did consider Senzel heavily even if he was not the top choice of those of us on the board. While he only signed for $100K more than Moniak, I would bet the Phillies thought he might cost up to a million more and they chose the lower-priced theoretically higher-ceiling guy in Moniak. I find it hard to believe that this organization which values the hit tool so much was not looking at Senzel seriously.

Puk was always in the mix for the top pick coupled with our need for LHP.

I like that Keith Law includes Ortiz. He richly deserves it and could develop into a monster hitter in a few seasons. The thing with Senzel: what he signed for is not what he would have signed for had he been taken 1.1. An agent can't allow a college position player with good pedigree to sign that low after being taken 1.1. In a year in which there wasn't a clear 'best' H.S. player, discounts of the size we got are to be expected for a H.S. kid.

I would have been okay with Puk because of the long time need for a LH starting pitcher, but accepted Moniak because I figure the Phillies experts know much more about the players eligible for the draft than I do. Every draft has players picked in the first round that fail to ever make it to the majors and this has historically included some 1.1 picks. Nevertheless, having the first pick in the draft and not getting at least a solid ML regular has to be disappointing. I sure hope they can land a solid pick this coming draft.

I can understand a miss, even at 1.1. However, that we may come out of three straight Top 10 picks, including a 1.1, without even one guy who looks very likely to be at least above average regular is pretty bad.

Wow, can we please give Moniak another year or two before we designate him to the ash heap of baseball top draft pick failures. My guess is that had the Phils gone the natural route and played him at Williamsport last year we wouldn't be so ready to call him a failure.

I acknowledge that this year is important for him, crucial in fact. But I also know that when you are a young player who has never struggled before and suddenly struggles for the first time, especially if a lot is expected of you, a slump can turn terribly out of control and suddenly all you want is the end of the season and a complete do over.

Many of us long time Phillie phans recall the playoffs of 2009 when Hamels indicated, and he could have been misunderstood, that he couldn't wait for the season to end as he was so frustrated. IIRC, this occurred AFTER he had just beaten the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS but was clearly upset with his behavior after he glared at Chase Utley when the stellar second baseman made an error in the middle of the game.

I don't know if Moniak will make it or not, but I do know I am not ready to call his pick a mistake. I recall that most of us on this site were perfectly fine with the pick, especially after they got Gowdy in the next round.

You might add that it's not just Moniak. People are trying to write Haseley off, as well.

Eh... It's the off-season. People are apparently bored, and venting is what happens. So Moniak was dropped out of a top-100 list. That has nothing to do with how he will progress; he will be what he will be. But since we don't have any recent trades or other deal to dissect, Moniak's in the crosshairs.

WRT Hamels... yeah. I suspect if you search our archives, you'll find some posters who were trying really hard to bail on Cole as well - everything from "it was a bad pick" to "he's 'soft'" - all the usual stuff. it might be interesting to do some digging, and see who was busy thinking with their gut, and panicking, rather than putting the brain in gear.

Rereading my last post, I see that I come off more negative than I intended. I have not given up on Moniak even as I am concerned. 2018 clearly will be an important year for him as well as several other players in the system. Some players will start fast in the minors and flame out. Others put things together after a couple minor league seasons. Some will never make it while a few will sail quickly to the majors and never look back. I still have confidence in the Phillies and know that they had good reasons for the selections they have made in the past several years. I still think there is a good chance that a couple of the top picks of recent years will become solid contributors on the ML level.

We will have to see how things play out.

This is the part that I can't even wrap my brain around...

How in the world can anyone make any type of decisions on Haseley?

I get it...some people love to write narratives and will stretch the facts but adding haseley to this list is plain silly.

It's a bit premature to write off Moniak, and Randolph had a nice rebound last year at 20 years old in the FSL.
It's easy to forget that college players who go high in the draft often have meh freshmen years, then improve the next two years and are drafted at 21-22 year old juniors.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to judge the draft for two more years when Gowdy returns, if he adds velocity after TJ surgery, it looks great, if he struggles, well, crap happens.

There is at least a good chance that Randolph can recover some prospect value with a bump to Reading to improve his offensive stats- assuming he is able to make some sort of improvement.

Haseley's stock seems largely tied to his ability to add strength as a position player would instead of guy who also has to prepare his body like a pitcher. I have a lot of questions about his ability to get much power out of a stance that starts with his weight on his front leg, but if he improved his strength to impact that ball that should be apparent right from the start of next season.

Moniak, well fingers crossed he's still working on his strength and athleticism. I almost hope there was some nagging unreported injury that bothered him last year.

I think the point remains valid that after three years of top 10 picks, if you drafted a stud, you'd know it already.
