One thing about this situation that doesn't really bear discussion yet, but is almost certainly true IMO, is there will not be any changes to the Phillies front office before late 2021, if it's called for then.

Whatever this season is (if anything), it will be a mulligan. Where the team finishes in the standings will be unimportant compared to the sheer volume of other things to deal with (in terms of drafting and development and contracts and roster management). Continuity will be preferred, and they also won't want to pay new salaries before 2022 (which, if it comes to that, would mean buying out one year of Klentak, MacPhail's contract would be up).

No different from NBA, NHL and NCAA hoops--the pandemic gave a reprieve to a lot of coaches on warming seats.

Yeah but the NHL already made eight (!) in-season coaching changes. If there aren't any more in the NHL that will probably be because half the league already has a new coach compared to 2019 (since there were also seven in the off-season). Still can't rule it out.

Only three in the NBA, but I bet a few guys still get canned. Whether that includes the likes of Brown and D'Antoni - disappointing winners rather than outright bad coaches - we shall see.

Klentak and Brett Brown not dissimilar I suppose. People figured the Phillies had to make the playoffs this year for Klentak to stick around, and Brown needed to make the finals. Brown's seat was probably hotter.

There have actually been 20+ college hoops moves but none in the big conferences. I think that could still happen, right now ADs and schools do have bigger problems. Texas did cut loose its women's coach (whose deal was up in August), and spent a bunch of money replacing her with the Mississippi State coach.

Collegiate athletics and the college "industry" in general is going to be clobbered financially as a result of this. The issue with a lot of schools firing coaches is that they will have to pay two coaches at once, both the fired coach until his/her contract runs its course and the new coach, sometimes for millions at a time. That may prevent many firings.

Getting back to Strat-O-Matic simulations, NBCSNP's website is doing an interesting one of a WS between the 1980 & 2008 Phillies. Through two games at CBP, it's knotted up at 1-1 as we head to the Vet.

And in the Strat-O-Matic universe, the Phillies climb to 10-12 with a crisp 6-2 win over the Marlins. Efflin was outstanding, going seven innings, only one earned run, five hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. Lowers his ERA on the season to 1.93. Kingery shows signs of life with a homer. Neil Walker has been a great addition to the bench. Despite the chilly weather, a good crowd of more than 42k on hand.

Phillies complete the weekend sweep of the Marlins with a 7-5 win. Beleaguered Velasquez gets the win although his start wasn't pretty. Meanwhile, the Phillies offense showed signs of waking up as it banged out 11 hits. Segura, Hoskins and Gregorious all homered. Hot hitting--and healthy--Quinn seems to have become the everyday centerfielder. Phillies improve to 11-12 on the season.

It is fun to see them do this once... but honestly I would rather see it run 1000 times and see who actually comes out ahead. My guess is that the 1980 team is a better team, they had a great pitcher and a great hitter which the 2008 team couldnt quite match (2008 Howard not quite as good as Schmidt adjusting for league average I would guess, Carlton much better than anyone on 2008). The bullpen is interesting, 2008 had a great closer, 1980 has a depth of bullpen that is almost untouchable. Lineups (adjusting for league average) are probably fairly close.

I wonder what happens with statistically significant run of these. Then run 2009 and 2010 and I wonder if either of those were actually better. Then 1950 and 1976-8 for fun. Maybe 1993.

To get my baseball fix, I have been watching Ken Burns’ PBS series on baseball history. It has been very informative. I learned a lot about the game than I have ever had before.
