Seems to be an issue with Hernandez. He missed 2019 because of injury. Not sure if it was TJ or not, but maybe there is something on his scans to be concerned about long term unfortunately.

Probably means we’ll have to see both VV and Moore again. If that’s the case than I’d prefer us to just sell some pieces. The organization continues to be the laughing stock of the MLB.

So did the Pirates really pull out because of Hernandez or did they just like Seattle's late offer better? Hard to believe the Phillies couldn't have subbed a different player in, happens all the time (I believe the original Eflin Dodgers-Padres trade was like that, as was the Giles-Velasquez trade).

This seems more likely...think the pirates used the snag to drive up the price. There are more replacement level starters out there.

The package the Pirates ended up with does not seem better than the Phillies' package. Each has a catcher that profiles as a potential backup and Hernandez is a more experienced version of Tejada (as in he has actually had success in a full season league).

It does sound like the Pirates were trying to drive up the price and the Phillies said no.

Seattle is only one game out of the wild card hunt in the AL. To me, this shows DD didn't panic and didn't beg the Pirates to trade Anderson. VV and Moore are not starters. Anderson and Moore look(ed) decent in the pen.

This may all just be talk generated by bored media members but there is some chatter that Cherington may have wanted to game Dombrowski who succeeded him in Boston. I remember hearing the same talk twenty-four years ago at the deadline when the Phillies appeared set to move Ricky Bottalico to Seattle for then-uber prospect Jose Cruz, Jr. only to have the Mariners instead deal Cruz to Toronto for a lesser package of Mike Timlin and Paul Spoljaric (two guys who interestingly would later have brief unsuccessful Phillies tenures). The Mariners GM at the time was Woody Woodward who allegedly never got over the Phillies firing him after only a half season on the job in 1988. The Phillies GM at the time was still Lee Thomas who succeeded him in Philadelphia.

Learned the lesson of why you should read the article and not just the headline. I assumed that it meant the Mariners deal fell through because of a COVID issue, but then read the article to learn that he had just gotten back from COVID IL before the deal.

Ha, sorry, I could have been more clear. It's been well over a month since he came back, question is, did he get vaccinated? The Mariners had not reached 85% either IIRC.

As an aside, I wonder if Klentak will end up in Seattle working for DiPoto again once his Phillies contract runs its course and his patron MacPhail slinks back into retirement.

Yeah that seems likely. I'm sure the Phillies would like him to land as an assistant GM somewhere in any case, get out of the last year of the deal.

It's hard to believe - though not really - that MacPhail and Klentak remain so prominent on the organizational chart. Is MacPhail really doing anything (even on the business side)? No doubt he'll still get the "advisor" golden parachute.

Officially, Klentak's title is "Strategy & Development Officer", whatever that means. I've been a bit surprised that Gillick never slid into Montgomery's "Chairman" chair but, I suppose the "Chairman/Chairman Emeritus" title will probably disappear once Giles moves on to the Great Beyond.
