Neither of those prospects would have to be protected this offseason though. The rule 5 eligibility is exposing really raw prospects since the missed year last year counts. Teams are using just about all of their 40-man roster now, so a prospect really needs to be coming off a High A year at the least to be in consideration for a 40-man spot. We did that for Morales this offseason, though he would have been in High A last year if there had been a season.
The 180 limit is real (this is why they released Listi and several other players last week), but is not a real consideration till after the season because we just have to leave a draft pick in extended if we had a roster crunch. I doubt more than half the draftees will actually play this season. I guess the NDFAs do count, but there are always a few easy releases of veteran guys like Brock Stassi if they really need the spot.
