Phillies trade with Pittsburgh Cancelled. Anderson to Seattle

The Seattle Mariners are finalizing a deal to acquire left-hander Tyler Anderson from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN.

The Pirates thought they had a deal today for Anderson with Philadelphia, but it fell through on medical review. Seattle went and got him instead.

That seems a lot for Anderson even if both are in the 25-40 range. Definitely trading while their stock is going up. Makes dealing Marchan tougher though since we just took something off our prospect depth.

I wonder if this means Velasquez gets a DFA later this week. He is probably not tradeable now after the last few weeks.

I kinda liked Gutierrez. He was the guy we signed after the league voided his contract with the Braves because of their shady Latin America dealings. Probably behind Marchan and O'Hoppe and Nava and maybe even Perez.

Hernandez and Guitierrez were #30 and #31 on Winkleman's list. Both are guys who are sort of lottery tickets, good talent with limited production. Guitierrez is one of the guys we got from the Braves' signing mess up. As Squire [pointed out, we have a lot of catching depth in the organIzation.

Both are having what could be called breakout seasons in the low minors though. The Pirates definitely asked for the right low level prospects because one could see each in the majors if things break right. It is a fair trade because the end of our rotation is such a disaster, but it is not like we gave up nothing here.

This is a solid deal for the Phillies. Abrahan Gutierrez. was behind Marchan, O'hoppe and, Nava Plus they have the MLB catcher signed long term. Interesting the Pirates just drafted a catcher number 1 overall. Gutierrez is only a level above where he is going to start. I would think Hernandez looks to have a little bit better future. Both are several years away if they ever get there.
Anderson on the other hand gives the Phillies a solid 4th starter. He has pitched a little better than his numbers indicate as he got his head beat in by the Braves early in may to the tune of 9 earned runs. Other than that his number say solid 4th pitcher. Which is what they need.

In addition to Rule 5 considerations, the Phillies do need to dump some players to fit all of the new draftees and NDFAs into the 180 player restriction

Neither of those prospects would have to be protected this offseason though. The rule 5 eligibility is exposing really raw prospects since the missed year last year counts. Teams are using just about all of their 40-man roster now, so a prospect really needs to be coming off a High A year at the least to be in consideration for a 40-man spot. We did that for Morales this offseason, though he would have been in High A last year if there had been a season.

The 180 limit is real (this is why they released Listi and several other players last week), but is not a real consideration till after the season because we just have to leave a draft pick in extended if we had a roster crunch. I doubt more than half the draftees will actually play this season. I guess the NDFAs do count, but there are always a few easy releases of veteran guys like Brock Stassi if they really need the spot.

Don't know much about the prospects but relaible mediocre pitching has been a real weakness. This guy seems a significant upgrade on Anderson/Moore/Velasquez and probably Howard with his current shortcomings.

I think the biggest thing is hes gone at least 5 innings in all 18 starts this year. Just that could help improve our bullpen some

Of the prospects I like Hernandez more. Young right-hander sitting 93-94 and touching 96. He has been pretty consistent and durable at Clearwater and is still only 20. Sort of flew under the radar because he missed 2019 because of injury so had only played one year in the DSL prior to the pandemic. Gutierrez was the catcher we got from the Braves who had a couple of years at the GCL level before the pandemic. 800+ OPS this year at Clearwater. He is supposedly a little thickset like Grullon but has a decent hit tool and some power. Maybe a Cameron Rupp is another comp for him. Lots of things need to happen for him to make it, but he was not too far off from Grullon and Rupp at similar points.

The Pirates’ trade of Tyler Anderson to the Phillies has been held up because of an issue (presumably medical) with one of the two players going back to Pittsburgh, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Unclear where talks stand, whether player will be replaced.

I am at the double A game tonight. Just saw Marchan go back to the locker room. He was on the field and someone came up and said something to him. Lets hope he is not going in this deal now.

Even if it was a Covid issue, the player would be back in 7-10 days. Those two guys are long term projects, I doubt it holds up the deal. They could always do it as a PTBNL. And have a secondary choose from in case the player who has the Covid doesn't recover which I guess there is a 1 percent chance that happens. Has to be more of a degenerative type thing that a Dr of the Pirates may not like
