For some strange reason MLB is going to drag out the announcements of the Futures Game for a few days. No Phillies yet. But Curtis Mead is among the first 8 named:

Can't imagine they want Painter there unless they continue his midseason slowdown for a couple more weeks. Abel, McGarry, and O'Hoppe seem more likely.

First 8 Futures Game participants revealed

Miller has quietly been very good this year. Probably should be talking about him for Toronto potentially more than McGarry though I am guessing we fill the bottom of the staff with AAAA pitchers mostly.

Erik Miller seems to be an odd choice. Across 3 minor league seasons, a total of 72 innings and that includes 10 last year in AFL. I’m always wondering if he is healthy…if he is, why isn’t he pitching more?

Clearly the Phillies are prioritizing development, health, and a specific innings plan for Painter, McGarry, and Abel. Miller has been mostly hurt until this year but is now pitching well (1.52 ERA) in a multi-inning relief role.

Maybe he can build endurance and stamina in the future, but I really like him in this current role. Let's him develop more of his pitches, stay healthy, and actually get to the majors fairly quickly. He has good stuff. Left-handed, mid 90s velocity, decent slider and change. I think they are just being careful with him because he has pitched so few innings, but also remember multi-inning relievers are more part of the game these days. 2-3 innings every 3-4 games can be pretty valuable.

Edit - On Miller he just missed some time with COVID but he should be back this week.

O’hoppe seems like a nice prospect, but with JT blocking him, he’s really our top prospect we would trade. Abel or Painter should only be traded for an established young player with several years of control.

Organization comes in 25th on the Fangraphs live rankings. We have more players ranked (42) than most teams near the bottom but the depth is offset by lack of quality at the top compared to other organizations.

They are still just prospects until they either succeed or fail at the major league level.

I was so excited when Dom Brown was near the top of all the prospects lists, and for a short time, it seemed he was going to be a star.

I remember when it was supposed to be a toss-up between him and Michael Taylor and I guess they still traded the right guy.

it thought so too LSP. I was at the stadium that night he made his debut in Reading. he hit one clear over the pool area, roof and all. Man I thought he was the one. I guess he was for a month and a half. oh well, here's hoping Rojas becomes the one.

It took JP Crawford some time to live up to his Top 10 prospect ranking but he seems to be doing so now.

Well yes the Phillies seem to pretty reliably either keep 'em too long or trade 'em too soon (though I'm sure they don't really do that more than other teams, and Crawford is the only one of the big chips to work out. Sanchez and Howard TBD).

Going back to the Halladay and Lee deals, D'Arnaud and Carrasco have worked out pretty well long term. Most prospects fail to reach expectations of course. The Phillies record on trading prospects is mixed. Our issue is not having enough of them.

Well, I was also gonna say, what I wouldn't give to be a team that is trading away more prospects! Both because they have them and because they are legit World Series contenders. The system started getting barren because of that, but then didn't get re-stocked in the rebuild either.

And of course nobody is ever going to mourn the loss of D'Arnaud and Carrasco because they brought back two Cy Young caliber pitchers who contributed to incredible Phillies teams. Jean Segura, JT and Kyle Gibson probably never will.

Our problem is all our prospects have either graduated recently or are A ball, where there's a lot more variance.

Hopefully, Barber is finally getting the system on track, but we're used to disappointment.
