Worst thing they can do is start trading top prospects for one last push with the 30+ core, this approach rarely pays off but can bury a franchise for a decade.

In a way, they did that with Estevez who in the end probably gave the Phillies just an underwhelming 1/3 season for two good prospects.

Yeah that was a pretty classic rental and overpay for an overvalued role, especially since his presence had virtually no impact on the division race and playoff results for relievers (and closers) can be such a coin flip. Even more so if you only play four games instead of 10 or 15 (which Estevez also had a role in, though hardly the biggest one).

Yes, but DD basically shuffled the pen (SD out, Estavez in) and the two pitching prospects they got back were as good as the ones they traded - all second tier guys with upside but long odds. Basically the only net loss was Bergolla, a good 2B prospect with Stott ahead, Turner/Miller a possible move there, and a couple prospects behind him who were equally talented (Rincon and Saltiban).

if I trade someone like Crawford or Miller, it has to be a young player under team control who's a better fit, not a veteran with a big salary who is likely to decline the next couple seasons. I doubt there's a better fit than Miller out there.

The prospects we traded (Aldegheri and Klassen) were better than the prospects we got back (Chace and Johnson). Aldegheri is better than Johnson based on his 3 option years and Klassen has a higher ceiling than Chace while also being further away from rule 5 protection.

We still have a midlevel pitching depth problem. The system is just not loaded with many good starting pitching prospects.

He does feel like the best/simplest fit at first glance. But Jim Bowden says three years $44 million. Which is still not that big a deal for his skill set. Bowden has Tyler O'Neil getting $32 million two years and he's a platoon player.

The Guardians made to ALCS, they are not in a rebuilding mode. They have no reason to ship Kwan out. If anything they need to add some offense.

Was that Casty or Hayes? You have Bohm hitting 4th maybe and 6th. Maybe I am dense, but I can’t see how the positions are working. You seem to be missing a catcher and have 4 OF, assuming you have Profar in the OF?

It was a career year for Profar. I'd prefer to stay away. 8.6 career WAR and 32 years of age. No thanks. There isn't much in the FA market that is appealing, Soto aside.

I'm not high on Austin Hays, but maybe he'd accept a below arb salary for 2025 if the Phillies tacked on some sort of option year with buyout. Grichuk anyone? Adam Duvall is getting old, but still hits lefties well. Both had excellent OBPs against southpaws, have some power, and are decent on defense.

Agreed, but that would be selling low on Stott. I believe more in the 2023 version of Stott who flirted with hitting .300 than the 2024 version. When he's at his best, he works counts and takes a lot of pitches which is behavior that IMO the Phils could use more of.

Remember the Wheeze kids? Is that what we are going for? Trying to trade 2 of the 3 young position players we have for older players (Tucker is only 27, but still older) sure sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Not to mention this would use up any financial flexibility we have.

You need some players that are not at the top of the pay scale. Having only guys that are subject to open market pricing is too expensive and results in catastrophic penalties, not to mention high injury rates.

Stott and Bohm are probably our 2 best WAR/$ players. You need some of them.

You trade Bohm when Miller is ready.
You move Castellanos into a platoon role next year when Crawford/Ricones is ready.
Gradually working young players in and veterans out opens up cap room for strategic acquisitions.

You trade your second tier prospects who are blocked by your first tier prospects.
