Cot's has updated their spreadsheets with the new rules. Phillies are about $49 million under the $230 million cap including arbitration estimates. Note that $1.667 million (the 0-3 bonus pool) applies to the CBT. That was a win for the owners and takes a small hit from the other increases. $700K minimum salary now factored in as well.

I wonder if MLB froze player transaction announcements for a day. Really was expecting a flood last night. It is reasonable to assume lots of deals have been made. MLB might just have needed time to dot the i's and cross the t's on any contract changes.

Who says the Phillies aren't in the rumor mill!

NL MVP Bryce Harper is stumping for good friend/Vegas neighbor Kris Bryant in Philly. Harper pull helped keep Realmuto. Phils have needs but also options (Schwarber, Conforto, Castellanos, etc.) KB does fit, either for 3B and/or OF. He, too, has options: Sea, Colo, SD, NYM, more

But seriously, all of these names were linked to the Phillies before the lockout too, with Schwarber at the top and Bryant the luxury option. There aren't really any CFs, they aren't in the market for a SS or more than a 4-5 pitcher and they already signed a closer. Doesn't mean there won't be surprises, or that agents won't try to put the Phillies into rumors even when it isn't true.

Also, did Harper really help keep JT? I mean, okay, he did campaign, but if memory serves Middleton actually explicitly told Dombrowski to keep him, and raised the budget accordingly. Don't know that he needed Bryce to influence him there.

Rosenthal column mentions Chapman as a logical target for the Phillies. Says the A's would want Bohm and maybe Rojas. Not really a rumor though. That is more Rosenthal saying it would be a good fit.

Also, JoJo Romero to the 60. So there is now 1 open spot on the 40-man roster.

In other words Bohm's not enough?

Per source, A’s won’t agree to trade Matt Chapman to the Phillies unless returning package includes someone at the top of the Phillies farm system (Painter, Abel, Stott, etc). Source says that thus far, Phillies have been reluctant to deal those guys.

I don't see how the Phillies succeed by trading our better cheap players for a ~$10 mill guy. Chapman is not coming off a good season. Had been a 7.5 bWAR guy, now 3.5 bWAR with a .210 BA and .716 OPS. He's 29 this season. Take a chance on the kids and spend what we have to spend on FA. We have a lot of expensive, getting older players. We need cheap youngsters to balance the payroll. We still have Didi and Segura as vets in IF. Give Stott a chance.

Yeah trading for Chapman by himself is not super-appealing. But that 3.5 WAR and three gold gloves (dubious as those can be) looks a lot better than Bohm or Didi. You'd be upgrading the defense and hoping that the bat returns.

I think Stott does or doesn't get his chance regardless of anything else. Though I'd certainly trade him for Chapman if they were going to also sign Correa.

That's why it has to be a bigger trade with the A's. You get Chapman and Laureano and you can include Painter and a couple of second tier prospects.

Not interested in trading Abel or Painter. Both of these guys are potential front end of the rotation pitchers. Phillies finally have some decent talent in the minors and that's all trading partners want to discuss in deals. Nope, not interested.

I'm willing to trade one of them for the right deal; problem is, how do you know which one? The Phillies seemed smart to trade the injury-prone Sanchez and keep the promising Howard at the time and now neither of them are looking great.

And of the many pitchers the Phillies traded from 2009-2011 only one of them panned out (the one who's on the Mets now). Of course this team has neither the accomplishments nor the talent of those teams.

It's the same old same old. Yeah, the Phillies can't afford not to stockpile young talent for the future. But they're still treading water for the next 2 years if they don't (or if they don't exceed the CBT, the only way to fill all the holes w/o giving anything up).

I have to say that I would hope they would hold on to the prospects they are starting to develop although it seems they now have 3-4 candidates for the speedy, high on base type center field propsects.

Yeah, they can afford to deal one of the OFs and one of the catchers, they just don't get you quite the same return as one of the three untouchables. Off-season deals for controllable players also cost more than deadline deals. And in deals with teams like Oakland or Tampa or Pittsburgh you're supposed to be able to flex your $$.

I don't want to mortgage the future but my default expectation is still that said future will also include the players they get for Nola, Wheeler, Hoskins and possibly even Realmuto and Eflin after they don't win anything of note between now and the 2023 deadline.

I think I'd rather have Muzziotti hit .150 and just be a good defensive sub/pinch runner than welcome Herrera back. I guess we need someone to room with Familia on the road?
