The Mets are probably assuming one extra offensive position (DH) to be filled for 2022. I’m guessing other NL teams will also act accordingly.

I'm just wondering if the Phillies will pull the trigger on something this week. Lockout probably starts Thursday. I don't imagine the early non-tenders who become available will be that interesting. Maybe a platoon player or depth SP.

Perhaps WE should also assume an NL DH rather than chasing from behind as we almost always do. Yeah, yeah, I know, our DH will rotate among Harper, Hoskins and JT. But certainly adding an extra bat to the lineup would not hurt.

This seems very likely to me too. Galvis is almost certain to make the team; he plays a number of positions and seems well-liked. The Phils need a utility IF on the bench so it may as well be Freddy. Ideally either Didi or Stott steps forward to take the SS role. If neither of them do, then Galvis is an acceptable everyday replacement until someone better can be found. The risk I see here is that Galvis ends up getting the majority of starts at SS but that's a chance I think the Phils have to take given the other holes they need to fill.

I don't think there's anything certain about Galvis. He's still a free agent. They could do better, they could do worse. I'm not even certain Maton would be a downgrade from him (or Torreyes), though obviously just for the bench spot, not significant playing time.

Didi should play quite a bit of DH too if his bat comes back/he's healthy. But bringing back MIller or someone like him is also a good answer there. Last years bench was always kind of short one bat (it was Miller and no one) so they just need to address that to also add someone to the DH pool.

Hector Neris' market is hot and he could agree to a deal soon. Phillies had pursued him, but he will apparently sign elsewhere. Will leave as Phillies' all-time leader in Ks by a reliever

Seems like fair-market value. They were able to get out of paying him $7.5 million last year (he got $5 million in arbitration) but $8.5 as a free agent is still not even closer money.

We'll probably miss him. We do play the Astros too.

It is interesting that the second tier free agent market is very active. I guess that is a sign that both sides are thinking the economic system is not going to change radically. There is always the possible of higher salaries available afterwards (a higher luxury tax threshold, no compensation for QO free agents any more), but there is also the possibility of lower (a flood of new free agents depressing the market, a lower competitive balance threshold like the owners proposed).

Really does not feel like major changes are in store here. Owners seem to betting again on the players not hanging together (where it is much harder for them with shorter careers).

I wonder if the Phillies were close in their offer maybe even a little more if he would still have chosen the Astros. In general I am not a fan of paying setup guys 8.5 million but I do think the Phillies wanted to keep him.

This is not to say they are beyond critique or that they will make the right move. Just that they haven’t already failed here on November 27, and it doesn’t need to be world ending. Personally I think not re-signing Hector is bad, but they still can make other moves.

Seems to me the best CF option left on the UFA board are Chris Taylor or Joc Peterson. But Peterson would have to be part of a platoon. (Perhaps with Vierling?).

I don't know that you sign Taylor to be your everyday CF either. But either are options, Regardless of position.
