Sounds like a look-see move, then drop him to AAA in the spring or cut him outright.

Which is a poor team move, bring in a bunch of injured guys or guys who fell between the cracks, audition them, hope to get lucky, otherwise move on. Nail a few cheap players each year to fill out the roster.

TB personnel strategies with a rich team budget could be a killer, find bargains, develop players, but you can afford to lock down your best young players instead of trading them for pennies on the dollar before they hit FA.

Well true. But laureano is currently suspended & Oakland has so may other platers to trade, maybe we could slip that trade by Bean.

Word has gotten out that the Orioles would listen on star CF Cedric Mullins, and teams are lining up to give it a shot knowing it’s a long shot. Asking price is understandably extremely high. All these teams (and more) could use a CF: Philly, Rangers, Astros, Giants, Mets, Yanks.

I have to say a trade w the As for Laureano and Chapman intrigues me quite a bit. A strong defender in CF who can put up an OPS+ of about 120 on a super cheap deal plus an elite defender w/ a career OPS+ of 120 could be a game changer for this treat, allowing them to spend bigger $ on an impact bat (Kyle Schwarber, perhaps?) and some quality relievers.

Of course, it would take a pretty hefty deal to get those two from the As despite Laureano’s suspension. I’d assume it starts w/ Bohm (though I’d hate selling low on him). Or maybe we keep Bohm and move him to LF and start the deal w someone like Painter. Either way, getting both of these guys would require taking a big bite out of our system. What do folks think it would take? Would it take Abel? Would that be worth doing?

If you think the Phils need to take a shot while we have Harper, Wheeler, and Realmuto in their prime, I might be willing to pay that price since a deal like this would give the Phils seriously payroll flexibility to fill their remaining holes.

i cannot imagine being able to obtain both Chapman and Laureano without emptying our entire minor leagues of prospects.

I'm not sure. I think maybe Bohm, Painter, Marchan, Segura and one of Moniak, Hasely might get it done. Remember, Oakland is all about saving money. Chapman is going to start being expensive and the Phillies could ink him to a longer term deal. Segura comes off the books after next season, so the A's would be cutting payroll and adding younger players that don't make much.

Chapman was awful in 2021. I'd want to be sure I know why before I'd trade for him. He was very good in '18 and '19, though.

He did strike out a lot, but not awful, still connected on 27 bombs and knocked in 72 and walked 80 times. It was his worst MLB full season, but he was coming off a hip surgery in 2020. He is someone who could regain his prime form going into his age 29 season.

Definitely not as good as has 2018 and 2019 seasons but still 3.5 WAR - the same as Realmuto.

But the drop from 18/19 also possibly makes the price more reasonable.

That said, you’re trading for him you’re obviously doing it with the belief that in his age 29 season his offense will revert closer to 18/19.

I’m a hard no on that. I’m a big believer in not paying for saves, and this is an overpay for Harder even if we also get Chapman.

Swap out Harder for Laureano and Abel for Painter and I’d think hard about it.

I guess I'm not the only one who isn't that impressed with the Mets moves. They will be losing Syndergaard, Conforto and Baez and replacing them with Marte, Romero and Canha. Marte is 33 and Canha is 32.

That MLB.com trade IS a doozy, and i am more than a hard no on that. if DD pulls that one (which if past is shown he could) that would start my losing of interest in the phils. Way too much for those 2. Ruben would have the "fleeced" title (that is attached to his name) removed from him for all time.

Are we sure the Escobar signing closes the door on Baez? But otherwise I agree, they are solid signings but not game-changers.

It certainlly sets the market though. The Phillies may have to think hard about whether to trade prospects while this Wheeler/Nola/JT window is open, but if they don't they will certainly have to commit some 2024-2025 dead money.

Well those signings certainly reduce the available options for center field & lead off hitter for the Phils. Marte, other than his age, was the perfect fit for what DD claims he would be looking for in centerfield. I have some concern that this means we will be dumpster diving to fill the gap in center. Of course it is still early but Ramon Laureano does not seem like a lead off hitter.

Well, you've been hoping they will exceed the CBT and that always seemed unlikely to me. So at least one of the four holes they have to fill (LF, CF, SS, closer), if not two, will certainly be done on the cheap. But if Dombrowski is in fact serious about upgrading both the leadoff spot and getting a middle of the order bat, those are both likely big-ticket items. Either of those roles could also be filled by a SS. If they did go big there (and still get a big LF) a patchwork CF solution is probably still okay. If they really intend to go with Didi/Stott/cheap bench guy at SS the CF has to be better.
