Phillies Acquire LHP Jason Vargas from Mets

Just because some people castigate you doesn’t mean other posters disregard or don’t believe your posts. We don’t use the “like” option here although it is a silent approval. Also sometimes I read an argument here after it’s done or I’m not sure what I believe, but it’s given me something to think about. I appreciate your input. In this case “ pitching prospect” is widely known to mean someone as yet unproven or inexperienced in the majors. By your definition every new player, if not existing players added to the Phillies is a prospect, meaning there is no certainty, but differing levels of probability about how they will perform. Hopeful would be a better term.

When the Phillies signed Morton, I thought of him more as a journeyman pitcher who had shown some signs of finally putting things together. Everything seemed to be going well until he got hurt and missed most of the season.

The Mets sent the Phillies $2.9 million in the deal, saving $2 million on the remainder of Vargas’ contract. Their return was Austin Bossart, a 26-year-catcher at Double A who was a teammate of Bradley Wilpon, the son of Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, for one season at Penn.

I assume projection is largely based on run differential, our record is five games better than X W-L, Mets' are par.

I would also hope it is based upon remaining strength of schedule, current team roster and opponents current roster. Does the projections change immediately for all teams every time a player gets injured and is out for awhile. If Nola got hurt would the Phillies projected w-L and % to make playoffs reflect that situaiton?

They do change daily but I'm not sure any one injury, even of an important player, can radically change them. (Safe to say that adding Stroman did more than our adding Vargas though).

Phillies rest of season schedule is considerably easier than the Mets, hence, my assumption that run differential is the biggest thing in this case (enough that the SOS gives the Phillies no advantage). I assume projected WAR up and down the roster factors in as well.
