This season reinforces my philosophy that "homegrown's alright with me, homegrown's the way it should be"
It would have been tempting to package a couple young pitchers (see the Garcia trade) for an experienced vet, instead by going with the young pitching, they not only have a loaded rotation, but depth in the system because they've kept their prospects.
It doesn't mean you don't trade prospects, it means you trade "surplus" prospects, Kilome still had trade value but had little value to the Phillies with a solid ML rotation, a deep Lehigh rotation (with Suarez promoted and Eickhoff returning) and younger pitchers passing him (Sixto, Medina, et al).
Because of Klentak's patience, both with prospects and on the FA market (waiting out Arrieta and getting him for 3 years and not blocking younger pitchers down the road), the Phillies are not only making a run this year, but are well positioned to make a run every year. They have cap flexibility, a deep farm system, invested a lot of money in development and don't have glaring holes.
I hope Klentak takes that approach to FA this winter, don't panic and try to make the big move, stick to your reservation price, trust your young talent, and look for pieces that will provide incremental improvement. You don't have to do it all in one offseason, at some point Williams moves to LF, Hoskins to 1B, so maybe you get that RF in 2019 or maybe you wait until 2021 (when a certain FA hits the market).
