Jim Salisbury reporting that his sources say that Cesar Hernandez is a hot name in trade talks (he speculated to the Angels) with the Phillies then acquiring Howie Kendrick to play 2B as a one year placeholder before the winner of the Valentin/Kingery battle emerges.

Salisbury is usually pretty reliable. What, I wonder, would they be getting in return? It's an interesting strategy trading Cesar away after a very strong season. They must feel it's not sustainable, and be trying to convert an over-valued asset. Not sure what young player I'd want from the Angels...

After looking at their team, there's one obvious guy (who won't, obviously, be traded) and the rest of their team and system are pretty old or pretty bad or both. Their best prospects (such as they are) are in low-A ball and below.

The winner of the Valentin/Kingery battle winner will also have to beat out whoever loses the long-term SS battle, probably Galvis, as well.

If they can't beat out Galvis, they're both flops. Galvis also isn't that far off from free agency. He's probably playing SS for someone else during his last two arbitration years (unless Crawford flops, or becomes part of a blockbuster deal).

Frankly, I think I would want their Low-A ball prospects. Right now we have a decent 40 man roster crunch.

This has been my argument for soooooo long with those that want to sign some washed up veteran, that maybe they can flip at the trade dead-line. If you give our young prospects a chance to gain value, they are inexpensive and have much more value than some Band-Aid in a sign and flip.

Klentak wasn't the scouting director in Anaheim. His background is in contracts and arbitration, not amateur talent acquisition.

To me that does make sense, but honestly I think I would rather have Hernandez. Low A prospects, except for the very elite, are always huge risks, most become nothing, so we would have to be flooded with them almost. Hernandez showed himself to be a more than solid leadoff hitter last year, his transformation, whether permanent or temporary, was impressive. If he continues to play like he did after getting moved into the leadoff spot it is not a question of which of Kingery or Valentin will unseat him as whether either of them can, even if/when they are ready for the majors.

Me too but my guess is that the Angles were mentioned just to stir the pot.

Hernandez probably is gone. The Phillies middle IF is in a state of flux. Crawford is the SS of the future. If Kingery or Valentin is the 2B of the future, there is no place for Galvis. If the right offer was made this winter for him, I'd move him now while his value is high as a "power hitting" SS.

Who knows?
Klentak is under no pressure to win now, he can wait a year and see how Crawford, Valentin and Kingery are progressing, and see if Hernandez is for real.
If he makes a trade, it'll because he was offered good value.
But he doesn't have to move anyone this year, no salary issues, no PT issues, no "clubhouse" issues.
Even if Crawford forces his way up by say July, Galvis can play some 2B and 3B and get plenty of PA.

I don't want to see the Phillies FO running around spending money like an elementary school kid who just got his birthday cash. Neshak and Kendrick are decent acquisitions for the money spent. No talent was lost on the deals. As for spending in LA, some folks look at every Cuban like their guaranteed locks the AS game.
Sure there are some players in the Caribbean that are worth top dollars and will be great but not every year does one show up. This may be one of those years. We can't downplay how hard it is to cultivate the player agents in LA. They're looking for an organization to pay for the one star in question and others as well in the future. It gets complicated.

I am both surprised and pleased by this.

Me, too. The Phillies now have the veteran steady presence in the rotation who they know. They don't have to trade for one. Hellickson could be flipped in July, if he is doing well. The Phillies could also sign him to a multi-year so he is around when they compete again. I am pleasantly surprised by this.
