Is Hellickson technically a free agent, at this moment? A "restricted" free agent, I guess?

He'll have to decline the QO I believe first. Teams must submit the QO by Nov. 7. Free agents can sign with any team the 8th. We are in the middle of a 5-day negotiating window.

November 14th is when players need to accept or reject the QO so he would be totally free at that point.

I don't see anything on the Phillies' official page yet, but it appears that Howard is now officially an ex-Phillie, as is Morton.

Hellickson is an unrestricted free agent.

However, during the "quiet period" (today through 11/7), all free agents may negotiate only with their prior organization. This is also the window during which a QO must be tendered, if the club wants to do that.

Once the QO is offered, Hellickson is still an unrestricted free agent - he can talk to anybody. Obviously, if he chooses to sign with another organization, he would simultaneously decline the QO. But the QO, if offered, doesn't restrict Hellickson in any way; his agent can just ignore it, if he chooses. That said, a QO does make the player less attractive to other clubs, because of the draft pick forfeiture issue.

I have no problem with Stairs as the hitting coach for the Phils. He is competent and seems to communicate well. I just do not believe a hitting coach at the ML level has much impact.

The key, as the fish says, is to make sure the development is properly done all the way up the ladder to the ML level. That is where teaching hitting can have the most impact and where the Phils need help IMO.

Klentak et al. need to develop a specific hitting philosophy and implementation system that will guide talent evaluation, acquisition and development so we generate productive and versatile hitters that understand what it means to be a Philadelphia Phillie hitter. Obviously, there is room for individuality within the system. We are not creating robots, but there should be a universal set of skills all Phillie hitters have and can do well. Those decisions should be based on what the data shows generates consistently efficient and productive offense at the ML level.

I guess it probably means more to the team to get a systemic hitting philosophy and teaching approach established for the guys before they get to the big leagues. I'd be curious to know if Klentak has plans to refine the development program to mold it into something more coherent. I think there is signs of that on the pitching side- pretty good numbers for Ks and walk rates throughout the system last year.

He seems like someone who actually will get non-tendered, and doesn't seem to add much that the Phillies don't already have. Low OBP, sub-.700 career OPS, plays the same position and bats from the same side as Altherr.

I could see Coco Crisp as an option. Switch-hitter but stronger from the left side, probably a little better defensively than some other guys you might try in LF, overpay to get him here on a one-year deal and then he's tradeable if Williams takes the spot.

I dunno. He's 37 and basically a replacement level player now. He had a good postseason, but to me that's a negative as it inflates his perceived value, and it might be more expensive to get him than a comparable player.
