I like it. Seems to slot in close to the Eflins in terms of upside. Solid control with 93-95 mph fastball and decent change. Does not miss too many bats but misses enough. Signed at 18 but did not play till 19 so unclear whether he needs to be protected for the rule 5 after 2018 (most likely) or 2019.

I like it a lot. Very solid numbers as he has moved up. As Andy's says he is solid in all his peripherals (K/9, BB/9, HR/9, WHIP). Has potential to be a 3/4 guy if he continues to develop.

One is always a little wary of LA pitchers that sign late, but this guy has good physical tools so imagine he just was much more developed at 18 than at 16. Then he had 2 consecutive years of going through 2 levels a year. Age 19 at rookie and short season. Age 20 at Low A and High A. Pretty consistent keeping his BB rate below 3/9 and also limiting HRs.

You could probably say that about any 6'3" 18-year-old pitcher who signs. Not just Latin American.

I can't assert definitively... but as I understand the rules, De Los Santos would be Rule 5-eligible next winter. He signed on July 17, 2014, per Baseball America. There's an exception in the rules [Rule 5(c)(1)(C)] for players who sign after the conclusion of the season of the team they're assigned to, which affects Rule 5 eligibility for players signed in late summer - but I'm not comfortable assuming it applies to a player signed in mid-July! Conceivably, the Mariners signed him in July 2014, but dated the contract later? I wouldn't count on that.

All prospects come with risk... but I think I like this trade.

I think it is likely that he will need to be protected after this season. As the Phillies start thinking about major league moves in a year or two a compression trade moving some of our AA/AAA/AAAA starters will likely be needed. Lots of time to think about how to do that though.

This guy probably gets slotted in the Ranger Suarez/Jojo Romero part of the MLB.com top 30 (14th or 15th) though of course that list is very outdated since they don't bother to lower guys like Gowdy (still 11) till they do the new 2018 list.

They have Kilome, Medina, and De Los Santos back-to-back-to-back in their list. I would have Ortiz ahead of all three of them, and they have him 6 or 7 slots behind.

We really have a lot of very good pitchers who are of Latin heritage. That's a pretty new thing for the Phils.

My guess would be he opens in AAA, but is part of the "expanded" rotation that the club will need to get through the season (unless he struggles in AAA, but there's nothing in his record to suggest that).

The Pads may well try to extend Galvis - but the Phillies weren't going to do that (well, unless they traded Crawford!).

EDmuch probably won't like it (based on recent posts), but I do - one year of Galvis for somebody who could be in the rotation, as potentially more than a back-end guy, within a year or so.

In my mind that really upgrades Klentak's off-season. Getting a possible rotation starter for one year of a guy who was going to be a back-up IF is a pretty solid trade.

This trade DOES actually help the major league roster. Now Crawford plays every day. Crawford could easily be a 2-4 WAR SS next season because his OBP will be better than Galvis which means he is going to grade better offensively. As long as he does not make 40 errors (always possible with a rookie SS) he probably is close to what Galvis was defensively also (more range, more errors most likely but it will add up to something close).

The incentive to not have Galvis bat 600 times helps the major league roster.

He'll probably open in AA ball, there's too many prospects for the AAA rotation.
Right now I have Thompson, Eflin, Anderson, Eshelman, Tavares in the Lehigh rotation, with Leibrandt as the 6th starter
So that gives you Kilome, De Los Santos, Irvin, Waguespack, El Garcia, Viza as your Reading rotation, with Ed Garcia and Sanchez as swing men.

If De Los Santos is better than guys like Anderson, Eshelman, and Tavares in Spring Training he could easily slot ahead of them in AAA next year. Rule number one in prospect development is that the better prospects always go to their proper level first regardless of who is ahead of them.

Depth Charts and Steamer both project JP at 1.1 WAR, but I agree with you that he could exceed that. I think they underrate his defense, but, as you noted, rookie SSs sometime struggle defensively. We really could be pretty good offensively this year if Franco bounces back or if we replace him with a better player (Machado, Frazier, etc.). Even moving Cesar to 3rd would improve the offense if Kingery can handle the big leagues. Could use improvement at catcher, and Hoskins continuing to be a unicorn.
