For the most part I agree with you also. There are things he did I did not like, I know my grandfather did not care for him.
He certainly meant a great deal to some people more in his time, he was a lightning rod for many of the issues of the 60s and 70s.
I will never forget watching Larry Holmes begging the ref to stop the fight against him. I don't think it was because he wanted the victory as much as he feared he was seriously hurting Ali and he recognized him as a iconic figure.
RIP. I may not like everything he did, but I didn't grow up in his skin and I believe that sometimes you just have to realize that greatness can be found even in people that don't always represent oneself.
