Marty Marion, seven time All-Star, 1944 NL MVP, was on 4 pennant winning and 3 world championship Cardinal clubs. Later manager and minor league team owner. Despite pedestrian offensive stats (career OPR+ of 81) Marion was widely regarded as the premier defensive shortstop of his era, earning the sobriquets Mr Shortstop and the Octopus. Marion stood 6' 2" and when Earl Weaver was once asked why he thought Ripken could play short, said, "I watched Marty Marion play." Marion once received 40% of the vote for the HOF but failed to gain admission. Marion was 93.

I think Liz Taylor qualifies as a little more than "semi-famous."

My 6-degrees of separation link to her: In 1961, Life magazine did an article about her in Cleopatra. In the same edition, there was an article about the dying Steam Engine (trains) and a photographer shot a picture of me (almost 3 years old) and my mother in Schwenksville (looking at trains). (Actually, I was crying up a storm in the picture; The train had just blown its whistle, scaring the bejeezes out of me...my mom was checking to make sure that was all that got scared out of me. )

Well in all honestly, I haven't heard of probably 3/4 of the people whose deaths are mentioned in this thread, so they are semi-famous. I'm a charter member of the anti-thread proliferation society and would see it as massive message board clutter create a new thread for people who die that most of us don't know, but who may have some personal connection or identification to individual posters.

I'd say Liz Taylor probably deserves her own thread. I think the point on the first page about a shoe salesman in Toledo is in the spirit of one of the few poems I can actually tolerate.

I would agree that Liz deserves her own thread and that she is/was much more than Semi-Famous. That said I like the fact that I get email notifications of recent deaths that might be of interest and posting just a new one for Liz would not have given my fellow posters a heads up of this event. Maybe the (of Semi-Famous) needs to be modified?

The great director Sidney Lumet has passed away. Among others, Lumet made 12 Angry Men, The Pawnbroker, Long Day's Journey into Night, Serpico, Murder on the Orient Express, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, The Verdict and most recently, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. He was 86.

Some sad news for Doctor Who fans. Elisabeth Sladen, the actress who portrayed Sarah Jane Smith, probably the most popular of the Doctor's companions, passed away at age 63. She had reprised the role on the latest incarnation of Doctor Who and a show based on the character herself. Apparently she had been battling cancer.

This is the second death this year of classic Who characters. Nicholas Courtney, who portrayed Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (and recently reprised that role in an episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures) passed away in February.
