More posturing, I think. Wouldn't take much for there to be "progress" over the next 7 days, reports are already saying owners aren't locked into the idea of int'l draft.

If this did happen, that would also delay Rule V draft no?

Interesting interplay concerning Bryce Harper:

In other words, the Nationals decided to leak something to Nightengale, implying willingness to walk away from Harper after 2018 - in response to Boras' opening number in this winter's arbitration negotiations.

If the Nats and Harper actually go to arbitration, my money is on Harper winning - Boras is smart, and he'll peg Harper's arbitration value at a level he can defend.

Which means the Nats could trade him this coming off-season rather then let him walk and get nothing. Wonder if they'd do that....and I wonder how much he'd bring when you know he will hit FA.

Harper is an incredible player, but a spoiled, entitled twit as well. I wouldn't want him on my team no matter how talented. He and Boras deserve each other.

Reportedly, the free agent contract number is 10 years, $400 million.

He may just get close to it in a couple years.

I am not sure I would go so far as to say that Harper is a great player who teammates can't stand but I do get the sense that he is something of a flake with manageable eccentricities.

I don't think there is any way that the Nationals can get reasonable value for Harper back in a trade. They ought to really double down on trying to win in it all 2017-18 and then totally gut the team '98 Marlins style in 2019 and rebuild.

I don't know how much stock to put into this but for a long time, many have thought that it's a foregone conclusion that he'll be a Yankee in 2018. Big money, grew up a Yankee fan (though not from NY), made a very publicized visit to Monument Park when the Nationals last played there.
