Any interest in claiming Tom Wilhelmson? Had a very poor season last year, but seemingly turned things around in the second half. 95+ fastball, 52%+ ground ball ratio, has done some closing, expected to get about 3.8 million in arbitration.
I like him better than some we have on the roster now.

Not an uninteresting thought, if they like him, since they can afford the $ where a lot of other teams are probably hoping to get him cheap. They paid Hernandez that much, and will be paying Gomez that much.

Thing is, you don't have to go to arbitration. A creative team should claim him and then get him signed to a new deal (incentive-laden or multi-year).

I doubt it happens too but I'm with the players. An international draft is a huge concession to make compared to tweaking the FA comp system. Of course the real power struggle regarding an int'l draft is probably between different ownership factions.

As one person on the players’ side put it: “We aren’t giving them something that affects 30 percent of big leaguers and probably 50 percent of minor leaguers in exchange for something that affects less than 20 players every year, especially guys who are staring $17 million in the face.” The QA $17 million is not hurting the players.

MLB became the model for sports labor peace after it learned the consequences of labor armageddon in '94-'95, as the NHL did in 2004-05. However, those memories are becoming more and more distant.

Despite what the article says, I think trades could still happen if there is a lockout. That massive Padres-Astros trade went down in December of 1994. One of the most interesting trades in history.

In '94 the CBA was stilll in effect until the end of the year, the players were on strike. In this case there would be no CBA and it would be a lockout.
