In a painful reminder of what might have been, the Twins signed outfielder Leandro Castro today from the Independent League.

Why does Castro become such a painful reminder to me? Because in the Hunter Pence deal with Houston in 2011, the PTBNL coming from the Phils was either going to be Castro or Domingo Santana. Reports were that the Stros were close to choosing Castro but he had suffered an injury that season that cut his season short and Houston thought Santana was a safer choice.

Now it is not yet apparent that Santana will ever become all that it appears he could be but the only player from that deal that I regretted losing was Santana.

Santana really has to begin to show something this season. 2017 will be his third ML season and he turns 25 in August so the statue of limitations will soon toll on the "still young" defense.

He did have a 792 OPS last season while fighting injuries with most of the season at age 23. So while still young, he is producing. His bigger problem may be defense where the metrics on him were pretty bad last year.

All is quiet on the Shane Victorino front. I wonder how long into ST he'll wait before he officially hangs them up or if for faint hope and/or love of the game he'll sign with an independent league team.

The Red Sox have signed outfielder Brian Bogusevic to a minor league deal. The 32-year-old had a tough season with Orix in Japan in 2016, batting just .187/.320/.322 over 193 plate appearances. He last appeared in the big leagues with the Phillies in 2015. per mlbtraderumors

Rangers reliever Jake Diekman is expected to miss “at least half” of the 2017 season after undergoing surgery to “help alleviate ulcerative colitis,” according to Jeff Wilson of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram (via Twitter).

Interestingly, there's some thought that Kendrick replaces another ex-Phil, Sean O'Sullivan as the a pitcher the Red Sox signed to stash at AAA in case of an emergency.

Tigers designate Anthony Gose for assignment. Gose's career really seemed to go south last season when he just seemed to have a meltdown both in terms of on-the-field performance and as a dugout citizen. Still only 25 years old though.

Just a potentially sad FYI, reports from those who have seen him in Clearwater say that former Phillie catcher Darren Daulton does not look good and appears very ill.

Apparently some of his former teammates help him around as he appears weak. So sorry to hear this, I believe he suffered a brain tumor, much like teammates Tug McGraw and John Vukovich did.

Hope this is merely temporary, Dutch provided us with lots of fond memories in 1992-93 and did win a World Championship with the Marlins in 1997.

One of several stories speculating that something was wrong at the Vet. I'm not a big conspiracy guy at all, however too many players, including Larry Bowa, have raised the question.

Yes, but is there a similar incidence of brain cancer among former Eagles players and front office personnel for the Phillies and Eagles (and the Sixers had their offices there for several years, too)? Was the Philllies clubhouse next to a location where a lot of radio waves were beamed?
