I think McPhail was taking the heat for Klentak by lowering expectations - it doesn't make sense to move a top prospect to increase your odds of making the wildcard with a 50/50 shot at a quick exit. Sorta like drawing to an inside straight.
I don't expect anything more than the kind of moves he made last year, cheap additions that can help at the margin, but if they make a run, it'll be with the players already in the system.
With Haseley in the majors, Moniak stepping up in AA, Bohm and Stott only a couple years away, the Phillies could have a deep young core of players. As we've seen, a solid lineup top to bottom, combined with a deep bullpen and you're set up for a run every year. With Nola as the SP anchor, you just need some solid 5-6 inning guys, not a bunch of aces.
