Haseley may be making it possible to DFA Quinn.

Quinn may be making it possible to dfa Quinn. Knowing his career, I'd keep him and use him as a PR/defensive replacement, assuming he'll be reinjured within several weeks as can be IL'ed, giving him another year to develop. We have SPs with higher OPS. He just isn't ready offensively, but has defensive value and may yet learn to hit. No need to be in a super rush to designate him.

Agreed, Rodriguez is not a keeper if all else is the same. I don't know that Brad MIller is actually an upgrade but he is now.

Hard to keep Quinn on the 40 next year IMO but yeah he will either be the 25th man or on the IL the rest of this season.

Speaking of MLBTR maybe this is what put the Phillies off him (given they still have lots of ties to Baltimore they probably heard about this even if they hadn't actively been considering getting him).

Easy to say, hard to do. Lots of people take extreme stances early in negotiations. Also easy to say what you would have done in hindsight.

Of course, though if he did actually take that stance, he successfully forced his way to the defending World Series champs. In any case, it was reported the Phillies didn't like his character and that was interpreted as him being a clubhouse concern but maybe the real issue is he wasn't a docile employee. I could see MacPhail (who has the most ties to the Orioles) nixing it.

Not sure how much our Orioles connections figured into this. Cashner was only there a year and a half.

And there's nobody in power left there who was there when MacPhail, Rice, Proefrock and Klentak were. But I still think they probably would have heard gossip more easily than say, the Rays.

I mean, the Orioles are the team trading him, so they're not going to tell you he's a clubhouse cancer on the phone during talks. But if one of your assistant GMs was still friends with some mid-level guys...

The Inquirer notes this morning that Matthew Boyd, one of the controllable starters we are supposedly looking at is starting against us Tuesday in Detroit. They also mention Shane Greene and Nick Castellanos as on the market.

Boyd was more interesting early in the season. He is getting hit lately though still misses bats. Last 4 starts have a 6+ ERA with 7 HRs given up in 25.1 innings. Balanced by 5 BBs and 42 Ks. Not sure how high I would go in terms of prospects but he certainly would help given the K rate even with the HRs. 3 more years of arbitration control for Boyd.

Greene is having a career year giving up only 20 hits in 36 IP with a 1.25 ERA. One more year of arbitration for him. He is probably not as good as his stats this year. Boyd probably is as good as his stats (but is not a game changer necessarily and the 3 years of control would make him expensive). Castellanos would be a rental. Better hitter than Haseley but a worse defender. Since someone would need to pick up his salary he might come inexpensively though I would not give up decent prospects for him.

Hasn’t played there since 2017. Maybe they could move Kingery to 3B and Haseley to CF. Probably a small decline defensively (we aren’t great in CF or at 3B now), but a plus offensively, and it strengthens the bench, too.

Castellanos wasn't capable at 3B even when he used to play there.

I think Castellanos was roughly equivalent to Franco defensively. Limited range, decent arm. Two years of not playing would not make him better at it though.

I think Castellanos is supposed to be the thing that would allow the Phillies to make the deal, i.e. by picking up the $. Boyd is still a bit of a prize due to being a lefty and the controllability.

Amazing that it is July 22 and the market hasn't really started yet beyond 5th starters. Gonna take a few years for teams to adjust to there not being a waiver market I guess. I suppose it all comes back to how much a wild card is worth. I mean, we're talking about getting Trevor Bauer but right now Cleveland is in the playoffs and we're not. Presumed sellers the Giants and D-Backs are two games back of us (though I don't imagine the Giants will waver from their plan). I guess the bubble teams won't sell until the last possible day (and the buyers might feel that way too).

I think McPhail was taking the heat for Klentak by lowering expectations - it doesn't make sense to move a top prospect to increase your odds of making the wildcard with a 50/50 shot at a quick exit. Sorta like drawing to an inside straight.

I don't expect anything more than the kind of moves he made last year, cheap additions that can help at the margin, but if they make a run, it'll be with the players already in the system.

With Haseley in the majors, Moniak stepping up in AA, Bohm and Stott only a couple years away, the Phillies could have a deep young core of players. As we've seen, a solid lineup top to bottom, combined with a deep bullpen and you're set up for a run every year. With Nola as the SP anchor, you just need some solid 5-6 inning guys, not a bunch of aces.

None of these players has shown they can be an above average regular yet. And I would submit that if we are trying to compare "cores" of young players there is nothing that would make the Phillies' set of young prospects better than other organizations.

The likelihood is that a couple of those 4 players will make it. Not all of them. It is not an especially deep set of prospects and none are highly rated (as in top 50). To count on this core to make the team great is basically a fool's errand. Which is completely different than saying that a couple of those players can be really good. It is just not a set of prospects that make us better than 20-25 other organizations necessarily. Everyone has number one picks doing well in the minors. The majors is tougher and we don't actually have any prospects dominating in the minors at the moment.

What about Bohm makes you think he hasn't shown he's an above average regular? Isn't he also in the top 50 on MLB.,com?

It's inherent in being a Phillies fan.

If you dig into the archives, you can find posters here who were really quite concerned that Chase Utley wasn't going to be particularly good - that he had defensive issues, that he might not be able to hit lefties, that he was being pushed too rapidly through the system, etc. You can find similar worries about pretty much any (every) young player the Phils have developed.

Of course, there's no certainty about any prospect - or for that matter, about any established player. A batting star gets hit in the head with a pitch, and he's never the same, never able to perform at the same level again. An effective starting pitcher suddenly completely loses control, can't find the strike zone, and never recovers. Stuff happens.
