Well, it's 4:05 p.m. and the Braves and Nationals made some significant moves, but it looks like the Phils are concluding this year's trade deadline with just Dickerson and no help for the SP or RP staff. We definitely needed a reliever. Bummer.

And Williams is still stuck on the NE Extension Shuttle?

Reds needed to move a SP after getting Bauer (who they can keep for next year too) and get what they can for a pending FA.

I'm still hoping we got another reliever, trades often break late and probably even more so today. But it seems the rotation is the rotation. Honestly if they can get to the postseason that's probably fine, just not sure it will get them there.

Braves trading for Shane Greene was a move the Braves needed to make - haven’t heard yet what price they paid. The Nats picked up bullpen pieces, but nothing substantial IMO. To me, it sounds like the prices were too high for difference-making players. Phillies were not the only team to only make moves at the margins.

Still hoping the commissioner's office is later than usual on final approvals given possible flurry but OTOH not much of the flurry.

Today is obviously a win for those who don't think the Wild Card is worth giving anything up for (or don't think the division is possible). A loss for those who want nothing less than playoff baseball of some kind this year at any case. I'm firmly in the middle. I think the best chance they had a month ago was if some of these relievers made their way back onto the team and instead things have only gotten worse, with the Arrieta injury on top of it. Between the pen, Jake, Herrera and Cutch you can't throw too much good money (or prospects) after bad. I think they actually did a good job with the marginal/depth improvements. It still comes down to the big bats.

Edit: Apparently Straily cleared outright waivers earlier this season to get off the 40-man roster. So it looks like we can stash him in AAA for a while until it's deemed that he's needed with the big league club.

Straily fell apart this year b/c his slider died.
So they'll probably give him a chance to resurrect it.

I think the reason Williams wasn't traded was a lack of takers, he's a defensive liability in LF with a career OPS of .738 despite a .328 BABIP. While he's still only 25, there's no evidence that he's making any progress (see Franco for a similar career trajectory, career OPS of .735, although his fielding is no longer a liability).

Dickerson has very strange stats this year, very little power but an abnormally high rate of doubles that make his slugging look great. I doubt 1 double / 7 ABs is sustainable (actually, I know it isnt) but hopefully he can keep his numbers fairly high by returning to a more career normal HR rate.

Dickerson has also had a strange fielding record. He won a Gold Glove last year, and it was fairly well justified statistically. The oddity of that is he has been a below average fielder most years including this year.

That Gold Glove last year really looks like a statistical quirk. When someone is below average every single year and then has one good season statistically gets an award I would question the statistics. There are just pretty imprecise and with all the shifts it is hard to know if it is the player or the positioning sometimes. I doubt he is awful in the field, but I can really believe he is below average.

Agree the other offensive stats are strange. Probably SSS involved though he has enough of a track record to think he is still a good hitter. He probably has more power than he showed this year but the walk rate this year might also be an aberration. He helps if Bruce can't come back completely. Just probably not a 900 OPS game changer.

He's given up 22 homers in 42 innings this year. With numbers like that you'd think he was already on the team.

Joey Wentz for Greene

Braves also included Travis Demeritte in the deal to get Shane Greene. He was once a highly regarding prospect. While he is not ranked in the Braves Top 30 prospects on mlb.com, Demeritte is having a pretty good year at AAA (20 HRs and a .944 OPS). Joey Wentz is the Braves #7 ranked prospect per mlb.com.

The Astros gave up prospects number 3, 4, 5 and 22 for Greinke and inherited $53 mil of contract. I read that situation completely wrong. I thought Greinke could be had for a couple fringe prospects. Glad the Phillies didn't go that route. Way too much. They sure look unbeatable though.

Yes, that is a lot to give, considering how much salary they took on. I guess that means the Diamondbacks ate about $20 million.

With bonuses I think Arizona's end is closer to $30 million. But a third of Greinke's salary (both this year and for the next two) is deferred, which probably made it a lot more palatable for the Astros.

I assume the Phillies could have kicked in more money and given up less, had they wanted to. But they certainly could not match (or even come close to matching) that package.

I was actually pretty pleased with the deadline from the Phillies perspective. Smyly has already pitched better than anybody we could have traded for and I’m intrigued by Vargas. The offense continues to underperform but get a media pass for it. Dickerson is a good player. Amazing to me that Jay Bruce tried to check a swing and will be out for 3 weeks as a result.

I agree wholeheartedly. It seems Klentak brought back value, while giving money but no minor league talent we needed to keep. Some in the media tried their best to push the unrealistic notion that it somehow made sense to strip the farm to go all-in this trade deadline. It would have been worth it to get Greinke for basically just $, but the price Arizona was able to get for him -- nope, no way. Even if our bullpen were a bit stronger -- no way.

I would have liked to see us add bullpen arms for next to nothing similar to what the Nats did, but other than that I’m ok with what was done.
