Personally not a fan of Bauer's off field stuff, however he does appear to have thick skin which would serve him well in Philly. Cleveland likely can't afford him in 2020, and he has suggested he won't ever seek a long term contract from anyone. An odd fella for certain. With Clevenger back, and Kluber back soon, Bauer could help them fill other needs. Cleveland needs MLB ready outfield help now, plus a DH.

Where has Greinke said he won't go to the Phils? Having a team on a no-trade list is not the same thing (often just the opposite).

Bauer and Kapler do seem like a good match, but is Bauer unpopular in the Cleveland clubhouse? They seem to support him (in the front office) and he has thrived. Who the heck knows what Cashner's supposed issues are, that just seemed like a weird leak/bit of gossip regardless. As if we were all pining for Andrew Cashner and needed to know why the Phillies blew it.

From here in Columbus, Ohio, I have never read anything about Bauer being unpopular in this clubhouse. He is viewed as somewhat of a flack and a person who marches to the beat of his own drummer but his teammates just sort of shrug and laugh it off.

Bauer's "flakiness" is much more likely, IMHO, to rub the Philly fan base the wrong way than to disrupt the clubhouse. Bauer is outspoken, opinionated, not at all humble.

There's a chance that he would appeal to Philadelphia... but I suspect it's more likely that they'd turn on him, egged on by our scintillating sports media "reporters" - the WIP pot-stirrers.

If he came here & pitched us into the playoffs, I think he would be embraced by the Phans. He is a VERY good pitcher.

I have real concerns about hos this team can ever move forward into a genuine playoff team without solid pitching. We are not developing solid MLB starters and it seems McPhail is committed to avoiding longer term contracts that the really good pitchers like Cole are going to demand in the off-season. Seems to me that unless McPhail backs off on his opposition to given the longer team to the high end starters, we are going nowhere.

Seems the most likely off-season move will be Cole Hamels on an Arrieta-like 2-3 year deal.

If they get a pitcher at this deadline and then Hamels (or someone like him) in the off-season that'd be a pretty good haul. Then you sign a bigger FA after Arrieta's contract is up. I don't think avoiding the top of the FA is a hindrance in and of itself. If this year's offense and bullpen was producing like they expected you have the '08 team (except with Nola's '09 performance).

If Cutch and the bullpen were healthy, that's easily 5 more wins.

The bullpen implosion makes the struggles by the young starters more of a problem, and losing Cutch impacted LF, CFand 3B (b/c Cutch could play CF at times, freeing Kingery for more IF duty).

I don't think a healthy Phillies team was expected to win more than 90 games, so if this version wins 85 it's a pretty good season.

This is probably why Kapler will still be the manager next year so long as things stablize (as they kind of have this week) and they finish above .500 and in the thick of the wild card (and if they make the playoffs he definitely isn't going anywhere, even if it's a short run.

The manager is rarely worth more than a couple wins. Losing Cutch, Herrera (even if he wasn't positive WAR) and five relievers was a lot. If there's blame to be assigned for some of the underperforming players that's more on the GM (either because he signed too many injury-prone guys or because the field staff follows the front office's analytical orders).

We'll see; the league doesn't have a book on him yet. Soon, the adjustments will begin, and we'll see how he adjusts in turn.

I was impressed that his two long hits last night were on a high FB a bit inside and a breaking ball out over the plate. Nice to see him put a charge in the curve.

On second look the double was on a waist-high inside FB. I want to see him drive an off-speed pitch, too.

True. There are times he looks completely overmatched at the plate. It's understandable that he was the best available option to come up, but could this stint be detrimental to his development if he struggles mightily or even goes back down? Does he start next season on the ML roster? His development is something to watch

That always astonishes me. Teams have scouts and most of the teams have minor league teams in the same leagues Haseley has played in. How difficult is it to learn the strengths and weaknesses of minor leaguers who are close to coming up to MLB. I'd expect each team to have a stack of scouting reports plus video on each of our top and proximate minor league players. I'm including scouting reports from other team's minor league managers and coaches.

Well... Every player has ABs where they look completely overmatched at the plate. I think sometimes we hold young players - kids who we really don't know about - to a different standard than we apply to established players. It's understandable; if Rhys Hoskins looks overmatched in a given AB against a given pitcher, we discount it, because we know his body of work. With a Haseley, a similar AB may be one of only a few we've seen, so it gets magnified, whether consciously or not.
