I assume when you are traded to the White Sox you are immediately added to the Major League roster if you hit .200 or above in TeeBall last season or if you are able to throw the ball to the catcher without it bouncing.

Steve Potter reporting that Christian McGowan is going to miss the season after having labrum surgery...this just after finally getting back from TJ. Too bad, he had promising stuff.

Matt noted that in his rankings (basically saying the ranking is way too high because he did not know about the injury when preparing it. He pitched OK in Arizona, so needing surgery is a bit of a surprise.

Torn labrum’s can be really bad IIRC. Wasn’t there a big deal years ago about a pitcher traded to the White Sox who had an undisclosed torn labrum and never pitched again?

According to the internet 68% of labrum surgeries return to full previous performance levels, although 22% never pitch again. 3:1 odds in his favor.

But, no on-a-flier reliever that has ever worked out has looked like he will work out when signed. He's also a viable first-time-through-the-league sixth starter option.

Note the lower ERAs are generally from the Japanese minor league (the Western League). The major league his team was in is the Central league. Looks like he has bounced back and forth to the minors most years of his career including each of the last 3.

If I had to guess he is more likely headed to Reading than Philly.

Assuming they treat him well it has to be a positive in terms of spreading the good news that is the Phillies and hopefully help sign the next Japanese free agent? Not necessarily the next super star but we haven't had anyone from Japan since Iguchi right?
