Jon Lieber with the nice 3 hit shutout of his former KC team last night. Rubber game today. Freddy Garcia to the DL. Jose Mesa takes his spot on the roster. Word is the Phils are thinking of a kid named Kyle Kendrick to add to the rotation when Garcia's slot comes up again.

A 14 run loss to a team that was 14 games under .500 in June, ugh. All the good feeling from the Mets sweep is gone. The debate is if even a wild card is out of the question. One crazy phan posted in yesterday's thread that now the Phils would return home and sweep the White Sox. We'll see about that. Jim Thome back in town, don't know how much he'll play though.

Phils are still in 3rd, where they've been since May 11th, and 5 games back.

Phils win 3-0 last night, first win of '07 when scoring 3 or fewer runs after 18 losses. Makeshift bullpen makes it hold up. And they're just 4 games out of first with Hamels going tonight against Jose Contreras.

4 RBIs for The Man last night, Phils take first two vs the ChiSox and are looking for a sweep this afternoon. And they're just 3 games back of the Mets.

Kyle Kendrick will make his major league debut, Clay Condrey sent back to Ottawa to make room. Jim Thome will see his first action of the series, starting at first for Chicago.

Well, Kendrick couldn't get the win, but the Phils did, sweeping the White Sox, moving to within 2 games of first and, for the first time this season, are as high as second place. Off day today, Tigers coming in next.

Opener with Detroit tonight. The Tigers and Phils lead their respective leagues in offense. Big test for our make-shift pitching staff.

Five homers for the Phils not enough as they lose the opener to Detroit 12-8 and we're back in third place, where we've spent most of the season so far.

Now they get to face Andrew Miller, officially still a rookie, much hyped pitching prospect. I might think about him as a bullpen guy, but there you go. Carlos Ruiz, who's been out with an injury, is finally back in the lineup. Phils expecting 45,000 to show up, biggest crowd of the season.

Nice win for the Phils last night, Jamie Moyer outpitching the Miller kid. Even bigger crowd expected today as we get to face Justin Verlander, coming off a no-hitter last time out. Phils 2 games back of first. Francisco Rosario heads to the DL, Brian Sanches called up.

After a disappointing series with Detroit, more IL play as the Phils head to Cleveland. Hamels goes for the Phils, a slumping pitcher named Cliff Lee pitches for them. Phils are 2 games behind the Mets, who have inquired about getting Brad Lidge to boost their staff.

It's easy to forget that Cleveland had a great season in 2007 only to cough up a 3-1 series lead to Boston in the ALCS. While you mention our phuture phriend Cliff Lee, our old phriend, Paul Byrd won 15 games for them. Believe it or not, Byrd hung around in MLB into the 2009 season.

Off day for the Phils after an ugly loss in Cleveland. Jon Lieber hurt, he may be out for a while (spoiler alert, he would next pitch again for the 2008 Chicago Cubs).

Up in NY, Mets fans are taking solace that neither the Braves or Phillies are winning enough to totally wipe away the Mets' division lead. All 3 teams having a rough June.

The shutout win puts the Phils into second place again. Last time they spent about a day there. Let's see if they can improve on that.

Oh, and the team is taking a flyer on a lefty reliever, J. C. Romero, signing him to a minor league contract. Boston released him last week, despite his decent looking stats.

Phils take the series in St Louis, still in 2nd, 3 games back. Off day today.

Phils have decided that J.D. Durbin will make a start in their upcoming series vs the Mets that includes a makeup game. Some of us were pulling for it to be J. A. Happ, but there's talk he may pitch in the series later anyway. But first they have a three game series with the Reds starting tomorrow.
