Phils became first team to lose a game in 2007 that it was leading by 6 runs in the 8th inning. "Defensive replacement" Roberson, Myers, bloops, walks, nightmares.

Up in New York, the Mets are saying that the sweep at the hands of the Phils has toughened them up so much that they're ready to close the division out. Postseason ticket lottery started for them today. Phils have day off to ponder their lost season.

Another loss to the Marlins, the fat lady is warming up, they say. 6 games out now in the east. Still close in the wild card, but we need to win every once in a while.

But tonight we're starting John Ennis, a journeyman with a bit of ML experience, making his 2nd career start. *Spoiler alert: also his last career start. He's the 13th different fellow to start a Phils' game this year. The good news is that Cole Hamels has been cleared to throw again.

Phils survive the Ennis start with a win, holding at 6 games back of the Mets. Rubber game vs Florida. Ryan Howard gets a rest vs the formerly tough lefty Dontrelle Willis.

It's also the 10th anniversary of the death of the legendary Richie Ashburn. Bill Conlin wrote a nice column about that anniversary.

Without looking at the outcome in advance, I'm predicting a W for the Phils because Moyer just ate up the Marlins.

Well, Moyer did carve up the Marlins until it went south quickly, but the Phils bashed their way to a series win.

Still 6 games back of the Mets. New York gave their potential league MVP David Wright the day off yesterday. Wright's quotes on manager Willie Randolph's move:

“He wanted me to finish strong and take (yesterday) off. It's his decision, he knows better than anybody, being around the game so long. He knows it's getting late in the season. The next one will be hopefully after we clinch.”

Some of us think there's reason to consider J-Roll for MVP, but we'll have to see about that. Others wanted to talk about how Moyer should be gone before 2008 rolls around.

Now the Rockies come to town for four.

Another ugly (12-0) loss, Kendrick hurt, Mets won. Phils are 7 games out with just 17 to play. Kinda need to start winning to have any kind of hope in this frustrating season.

Some of us are holding out hope for the wild card with the division all but lost.

With 17 games left to go, the Phillies are 7 games back. Probably insurmountable, right? The combined score of the last two games was 20-2 Rockies and we weren't even playing in Coors Field. Yes, pitching is the undoing of the 2007 Phillies, so it appears. Just to win the division by a game, they will need to go 13-4 while the Mets go 5-12. Seriously, can that really happen?!

Spoiler: Rockies are not on their epic 19-1 run yet but will only lose four more games before the World Series.

I watched this whole video. Man was it good to see the size of the crowds, the excitement generated by some incredible players. It took me back to those games and how exciting they were! How they overcame all the injuries is amazing. To see Howard's easy swing and the ball jumping off his bat! What a year it was!

Big blowout win last night, as our patchwork bullpen somehow goes 8 innings allowing only 1 run after another bad JD Durbin start.

Now it's on to New York, where the Mets are feeling good about their 6 1/2 game lead.

Former Phil Billy Wagner, talking about how the Mets expanded their lead after being swept by the Phils earlier in the month:

You win because you expect to win. You don't sweep and make a big deal about it. Now they are a bigger target for us. They embarrassed us…

When they come in there'll be a heightened awareness that, ‘Hey, they're here and they think they can whip our butts.’ I honestly think you don't want to wake a sleeping dog…

It'll be great to go out there and pound on them, just like they want to pound on us.

The Mets have gone 10-2 since that sweep. Phils 6-7 since then. At least there's a wild card to shoot for.

Nice 10 inning win for the Phils last night, now 5 1/2 games back of New York. Highlights of the game here from 49:55-50:50. Greg Dobbs' league leading 14th PH RBI the game winner. That's six straight vs the Mets.

Game 2 this afternoon. We've got our work cut out for us, it's Pedro Martinez for them.

Another win vs the Mets yesterday, 7 straight now. Think they're feeling the pressure now. We're 4 1/2 back. I have a feeling for years whenever one of the kids or I misplay something in a game of catch we're gonna yell "CARLOS BELTRAN!" Highlights here from 51:00 to 52:00.

Anyway, going for another sweep today vs the "still in first" Mets.
