Hamels pitched well but only went five and the bullpen which had been so good of late faltered, as did the offense in a 5-3 loss in the last MLB game played at RFK Stadium. Meanwhile, the Mets won putting us 2.5 games back. Since the Phillies came to within 1.5 games of the Mets five days ago, the Mets, seemingly to their credit, have won four out of five and three straight. One can't help but wonder if in 2007, like in 2005 and 2006, the Phillies and ther phans will have to settle for another "nice try" and a strong late-season postseason push that comes up just short.
As for the Nationals, after playing spoiler to us today, will they return the favor on the Mets when they head to Shea tomorrow? For the record, we close out the regular season against them at CBP next weekend.
I was at the game. One neat thing I saw was a Phillies phan in a Ryan Howard jersey sitting a few seats from a Nationals fan in a throwback Frank Howard Senators jersey.
SPOILER #1: Yes, the Nationals would play both the Mets and Phillies tough in the season's final week. However, one of those two teams would handle the pesky Nats better. Which one? Stay tuned!
SPOILER #2: While this would not be the last time in 2007 that the Phillies would lose ground in the standings to the Mets, it would be the last time that they fell further behind the Mets in the standings. What do I mean by that? Again, stay tuned!
