Good pitching from a bunch of maligned pitchers, some heroics from J-Roll and a walkoff homer by Ryan Howard.

Phils have taken the first two of the four vs the Mets, and are just 4 games back. But it'll seem hollow if they lose the next two. Slumping Jamie Moyer going for us. Matchup again seems to favor them with Oliver Perez starting.

Two players from that game still (kinda) on their same team..Jose Reyes (in their lineup in left field for the first time in his career) and David Wright, who's supposedly to discuss his future/possible retirement with the team at some point soon.

Yes! So far in this Phillies-Mets series we have Utley's dramatic return fueling a 9-2 Phillies win in game 1 and Rowand's "Holy Roller" in the 8th tying the game and Howard's home run in the 10th winning it in game 2!

This Mets series is still my favorite thing, more than any '08 postseason moment except maybe the Stairs HR. I was at the game with the controversial call and still in Philly watching the Howard HR on TV and I remember being at a Newark airport bar almost missing my flight for the game to come.

Well, phan in bama did predict interesting umpiring would happen in this series. We've seen Charlie ejected for a play that would've been easily overturned if baseball ever came up with instant replay, then last night, controversy, as CB Bucknor ends the game on an interference call on a play at 2nd. They should probably change the rule so players can't slide like that, even though it's kinda been the way they've played baseball forever.

The Phils are now in position to sweep, pretty much the only thing that could maybe stop the Mets' charge to a second straight divisional title. Day baseball...

Game 3 was a pitchers duel. Moyer got a single, found his way to third and scored on a sac fly by Burrell. But then in the 9th, the Mets staged a rally and had runners on first and second with one out. However, it looked like they would get Beltran to third but Anderson was ruled out on interference. More drama!

On to Game 4 for a BPS. Is it possible that Game 4 could have more drama than all the previous three very dramatic games had combined?

The 8/30/2007 game is one of the most memorable games of that season. I can still remember where I was--the tailgating lot at Rutgers prior to a football game--during the late innings of that game as I followed along on the radio.

It only seems to work that way for me with baseball, the way you can mark time and remember where you were/what you were doing when certain games or moments happened.

In a game "we'll talk about with our grandkids" the Phils sweep the Mets in dramatic fashion yesterday afternoon as Billy Wagner can't convert the old six out save opportunity.

"We'll get our chance to come back and take care of these guys," Lo Duca said. "They're dancing around the field now, but we'll see what happens when the time comes."

We'll see about that. Next up, the Marlins. Phils are 2 games out for first time since June 22nd. Will there be a letdown?

Phils won their season high sixth straight last night behind Kyle Kendrick. Some guy named Kane Davis even got to pitch. Phils start September right where they were after the Mets sweep, 2 games back in 2nd place. The Mets had their first winning month since May when it looked like they might run away with the division (15-13 in August).

Rod Barajas and Francisco Rosario are activated as rosters expand, more to come probably. Someone's already looking ahead to 2008, suggesting we pick up Matt Stairs. But let's focus on '07.

Phils lose the series to the Marlins in a game that had Charlie asking "What the hell?" We're now using Kane Davis in the later innings of a tie game???? Phils are now 4 games out, headed to Atlanta. The Braves, despite picking up Mark Teixeira, have slumped and are 7 1/2 games out. No way to make up a deficit that big this late. Phils add Fabio Castro to the roster.

I'm usually pretty good about remembering obscure players but Kane Davis rings no bells at this point.

What's funny is it seems like the 2007 team was no deeper in pitching than the current one, tons of patchwork late in the season.

Also, funny still that Myers was the closer. I guess we blew right by the game where he got into a fight with Sam Carchidi or did I blow by reading it?

It was mentioned in the post recapping the loss it followed, didn't post Carchidi's name so maybe that's why it slipped by.

Brett Myers got into it with an Inquirer reporter about the homers he allowed and Pat Burrell had to restrain him.
