Losing 2 of 3 to the red hot Pirates has us 5 games back. Off day today before make-or-break 10 game homestand. Chase Utley's going to see a hand specialist today, he's trying to get back on the field before the homestand ends. Will believe it when I see it.

UPDATE: Utley's been cleared to start swinging again. Yoel Hernandez injured and to the DL one game after being called up due to Zagurski's injury. Fabio Castro called up to replace him.

Phils are a half game out of the wild card lead and 5 games out of first. The crucial 10 game homestand starts with the fading Dodgers. People here are saying the Phils need to go at least 7-3.

Phils beat LA in the opener to keep pace, but it's announced Cole Hamels will miss his next start and could be out for weeks. Don't know it we have enough pitching to stay in the race. Ryan Howard did get his first ever ML stolen base last night though. Chase Utley supposedly ready to rehab in the minors. Shane Victorino is back though!

Slumping Ryan Howard hearing the boos as Phils lose to the Dodgers last night by 12 runs, matching their worst beating of the season.

Hamels MRI news is decent though, will miss only a couple starts. But now we get a Fabio Castro start.

The Phils are now 1-4 since being in the wild card lead, losing 2 of 3 to LA. Still in 2nd, still 5 games back as the wild card leading Padres come to town 2 games ahead of us. It's another one of those veteran matchups, Maddux vs Moyer. Fabio Castro was demoted, Brian Sanches is back. Tom Gordon looked awful. Chase Utley and Adam Eaton are in Reading rehabbing. So far this 10 game homestand is not awesome.

Fourth straight loss. Another blowout. Ugh. This is the mood of the board: With the Phils 1st non-competitive September approaching

Phils are 3 out of the wild card and now 6 games out of first. The fat lady is warming up. The fans are hardly booing at CBP.

Well, they did lose their fourth straight. The dream of a 6-4 homestand would require them winning out. The bullpen coughed up 3 runs in the last two innings. Brett Myers got into it with an Inquirer reporter about the homers he allowed and Pat Burrell had to restrain him.

We're now 7 games out with a little over a month to go. Don't know if we can make up that much ground in so short a time.

In fact, the NY Post says the NL East race is not officially over, but it's over.

Monster games for Howard and Werth and it's an easy win to salvage one lousy game. 2-4 on the crucial homestand so far. Phils have lost 3 games in the wild card race, but the Mets haven't done much to take advantage of the woes, only gaining a game in the standings. However, it's a 6 game lead for them as they come in for 4. They're feeling good, their team is seemingly all healthy again.

Aaron Rowand:

There's no doubt it's a big series. It's time to put up or shut up. We have 33 games left. We have to step up and leave it all out there.

Such a big series and there's great news for us. Chase is back and in the lineup. Not a great starter going for either team, let's see who can take advantage.

Jayson Werth continues his hit streak, going 9-9 over last two games. Folks are thinking put him in right next year and Victorino in center. Chase Utley returns with a homer, naturally, and Iguchi, now on the bench, pitches in with a 2 run PH homer. JD Durbin flirted with a no hitter for a while in the blowout win that had the Mets fans in attendance sneaking out early, good times. Phils are 5 back. Matchup seems to favor NY tonight, Glavine vs Eaton. John Ennis DFA'd to make room for the returning Eaton.

Funny to read that thread, even then we (well, mostly I) were complaining about Joe West. He doesnt make the news as much with his poor umpiring and bad disposition, but somehow this putz still has a job. He will come up for HOF candidacy someday (at least that means he will stop being an ump), I really hope the voters remember just how bad he was at this job.

Funny you say that because in this thread there is a post that Harry said "Endy Chavez takes a ball right down the middle for ball 3"

He is not a horrible technical umpire, although in my opinion he is not really very good and is much worse now as he has aged. His temperament is EXACTLY what you don't want in an umpire. He has no idea that he is not part of the show.
