GDT: Phillies at Nationals, First Summer Training Camp Game, 18 July 2020

Ump at second base costs Phillies a run in top of the first. Quinn, HBP, steals second but cannot advance to third on bad throw because it hits the umpire, stopping it from going to the outfield. Harper follows with hard hit ground ball to the second baseman in right field, moving Quinn to third. Of course, he scores easily if the ump doesn't block the throw earlier in the inning.

Hoskins walks, runners on the corners, two out.

Home run by Didi puts Phillies up 3-0. Estimated at 404 feet.

Segura singles. Caught stealing, 2-5. Yes, third baseman at second to take the throw.

Scherzer with 23 pitches, three runs on two hits, a HBP, and a walk.

Nola sets Nationals down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Two deep fly balls for outs and a groundout, 6-3. Total pitches: 8.

Quinn flies to left, runs scores. Phillies 4-0.

Harper, long drive to right for home run, on first pitch. Phillies 7-0.

Hoskins goes down swinging to end the inning.

Scherzer pitch count goes to 44 in two innings.

Don't forget, Phillies are 14-5 while the Nats are 6-11, or so the Nationals' broadcaster informs us. He pointed out that these stats today are part of the spring stats. Of course, that means nothing come next week.

Gameday unable to react to what is really going on and only shows Nola with 3.0 innings pitched.

So much for stats. I guess had Eaton hit a home run, it would not show up in the box score.

National announcers talking about the strange happenings. Nola evidently needed to throw more pitches in his prep for the season.

McCutchen flies to center to end the inning. Phillies go down making only two outs in the inning.

Evidently, Scherzer does not need more pitches. Gameday now showing Eaton coming up even though he made the fourth out last inning.

So, STATS are meaningless to MLB.

I thought Scherzer was through for the day the inning he only needed 2 outs. If he's still in there, he's got 88 pitches!

Nola gives up a one out walk in the 4th but gets the next two. One hit and one walk, three Ks over 4 and one third innings.

Phillies go down on three Ks in the top of the 5th: Quinn, Harper, Hoskins.

Scherzer benefitting form the gift out in the two out inning to come back strong.

Nationals now getting four outs again as Nola gets 3 outs on 6 pitches in the bottom of the fifth.

Again, Gameday moves on to the next half inning.

Nola gets K for the final out in the second 1-2-3-4 inning for Nola today.

We are seeing something that we likely will not see again for some time.

Gameday now says the third player to bat reaches on a fielder's choice, even though he made an out. They give no information as to what happened. So not only do they NOT follow the rules of baseball, they forge incorrect information into their box score to make it fit. Somehow they have to limit each inning to 3 outs even if 4 outs are made.

.....and I thought this game might be real baseball.
