Getting a win in the Alcantara game is big.

Seranthony had thrown more balls than strikes until the last two hitters. Then four straight strikes.

Huge win to start this series in Miami against a very top of the line starting pitcher.

Phillies again get good pitching. Gibson goes 6 innings and earns the win. The bullpen (Avarado, Hand, Dominguez) add a scoreless inning each to get the hold, hold, save.

A couple of timely doubles to score the two runs from Hall and Realmuto.

Okay, results count, and Dominguez got the scoreless ninth inning and the save, but I cannot call it a good outing. Walking three is not acceptable. Had 0-2, 0-2, and 1-2 counts on the three he ended up walking. He just has to figure out a way to put those batters away.

Enough negative vibes. The win breaks the 4 game losing string and gets the series off to a good start. Always good to win a close one run game.

I.m looking for Schwarber to hit a long ball tomorrow and lead a run scoring breakout from the offense.

This is just silly with Moniak. It keeps getting said that Herrera isn't hitting better, but he is, he has about a .570 OPS over the last 2 months. That is terrible, but it is almost double what Moniak is doing.

As I said in the other thread, that last two months yes, the last 28 days, not at all.

They are both wasted ABs. Question is what are the Phillies going to do about it. Moniak has a future (even if it's 5th OF or still in AAA next year), Herrera doesn't, neither of them should be playing on a contender probably. But if you have to forfeit one line-up spot every night you might still want the better fielder. (Except, of course, it's not like Mickey is a defensive stud.)

Whether the Phillies development/coaching staff ruined him or he was totally mis-scouted the numbers don't lie and he isn't remotely close to being an acceptable MLB player. I do recall reading a lot about the Phillies working to boost his power and him getting stronger through training as he got older. With all of that, his ISO is a humongous 0.023 and the easy, high contact swing which Gillick raved so much about is no where to be found.

But none of that - what Gillick saw or Joe Jordan or Driveline people screwed up matters anymore. The question is what was he doing last year and in spring training, and what did Dombrowski and Fuld - as well as Kevin Long and Girardi and Thomson - see in him that makes them want to stick with him now? If it's so obvious this isn't helping the Phillies or him why is he here? And if he's heading back to Allentown this weekend what was even the point of playing him tonight?

Hey, the Phillies have some obvious warts in their lineup, but we beat the leading candidate at this point for the Cy Young award. I wasn’t able to watch much of the game, but it looks like we got solid starting pitching, a couple of clutch hits, and a quality effort from the bullpen, even if Dominguez was a bit shaky (bend, don’t break). Let’s enjoy the victory and the end of the 4-game losing streak.

Clearly they should try to add an outfielder who can play a good defensive center field and hit better than Herrera. They also should try to add another starting pitcher.

I would try to deal Herrera and Familia at the deadline as well. I am not saying that these two can bring back what you are looking to add, but moving them for some return is a positive, IMO.

Yeah a big win in a game they were not favored to win.

And, Phillies just went 0-4 without Moniak in the line-up and now they've won a game. They also won his last start on July 9 and are 5-1 in all the July games he played in (so 1-5 without him). Not seriously suggesting causation but if he's not helping, he's not hurting, and the alternatives, albeit SSS, definitely not helping.

I'm afraid Odubel is still radioactive. A mediocre player who would still have to do all the press about his history in a new market. He's cheap enough to release. But either way they can't do that until they acquire someone.

Seeing what Alvarado is doing, and even Hand (who was released by Toronto last year with a 7+ ERA) I'm not even ready to write off Familia.

Fangraphs has Odubel with a slightly better Uzr150 than Moniak. Vierling is actually in the negative. He is actually best at RF and 2b (small sample). At least Odubel might pop one here and there.

I think Moniak is slightly better than Odubel in CF but the difference is really not that great. Odubel has always had decent instincts out there. Moniak might have a little more pure range in younger legs.

But the main point is that the roster simply does not need 2 left-handed CFs along with a right-handed platoon option. We are hurting both of their offensive games by splitting the meager playing time. When Camargo comes back he should replace one of the CFs and not Munoz. Our best roster might also have both Camargo and Maton on it (in that scenario Maton replaces Munoz).
