It upsets me that Strahm only pitched one inning. If you need five relievers it’s playing Russian reliever roulette. One of them may be the bullet.

Nick Ahmed

Pitching Change: Orion Kerkering replaces Seranthony DomĂnguez.
Called strike (96.5 mph four-seam fastball)
Ball (96.1 mph four-seam fastball)
In play, no out (85.6 mph sweeper)

Nick Ahmed singles on a ground ball to center fielder Johan Rojas.

Called strike (85.3 mph sweeper)
In play, no out (85.6 mph sweeper)

LaMonte Wade Jr. singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Marsh. Nick Ahmed to 3rd. Jung Hoo Lee to 2nd.

And the Russian just showed up

Ut oh. This is very ugly. Need a triple play. Kerkering’s ERA of 0.00 is in grave danger

Phillies haven’t had a triple play in years. This would be a great time

Like I said Kerkering is gonna need to step up if Seranthony isn't right.

Strahm has not been doing the long appearances as often this year because he's higher in the pecking order. And because they do still play match-ups even though he's one of the better guys for both.

The Russian roulette metaphor applies to anyone's second inning as much as a new pitcher.

Jorge Soler

Mound Visit.
Ball (86.6 mph sweeper)
Foul (85.9 mph sweeper)
Ball (96. mph four-seam fastball)
In play, run(s) (97.9 mph four-seam fastball)

Jorge Soler grounds into a double play, shortstop Edmundo Sosa to first baseman Bryce Harper. Nick Ahmed scores. Jung Hoo Lee to 3rd. LaMonte Wade Jr. out at 2nd. Jorge Soler out at 1st.

Philadelphia Phillies 4 - San Francisco Giants 3

13 out of his last 14 pitches were the sweeper. You have to be able to spot that fastball or it's not going to work, no matter how good the pitch is.

Michael Conforto

Ball (86.1 mph sweeper)
In play, out(s) (85. mph sweeper)

Michael Conforto flies out to right fielder Nick Castellanos.

I absolutely hate pitching most of the bullpen for only one inning per game. At most, there should only be a few one inning relievers and at least half of the pen should be able to pitch 2 or 3 innings per game routinely.

Kerkering was extremely lucky to not blow the lead and he did cut it in half.

Time to score some more runs.

Funny, now all I have to root for is the Phillies until September. Was hoping the Sixers and Flyers would provide more entertainment, but they both collapsed.

That's just not the game in 2024, both with what they know about match-ups and the kind of stuff relievers throw. And there's really no reason to assume that a pitcher who just sat in the dug-out for a half-inning is going to come back for a second inning against a completely different set of hitters in the same way he did in the previous one. A fresh arm with a specific match-up is no better or worse. It is also hindsight, whether it goes wrong or right.

I can't say I expected to be following the Flyers or Sixers any longer than now (just thought the Flyers would have played four or five games first).

Also your local hockey team is still in the playoffs.
