That was my first thought. Clearly he was a bargain given performance and deserved a reward. But knowing Howie, it’s hard to believe there wasn’t same finagling (er restructuring) done t improved our cap status. That’s Howie’s genius.

There might be some short-term benefit in reallocating some of the cap hit, which would be significant, but sounds like it's also a reward for him (though I'm sure they'll figure that out when the time comes if he isn't the same guy by then)..

I haven't read the details aside from the guaranteed money, but this type of contract is usually giving the player guaranteed money, but over a longer period of time and reducing some cap hits. If that is correct, then yes it's a reward, but not in the sense that it's $41M new money for Saquon.

That is my understanding and really the only way it makes sense. Guarantee him money and spread out the cap hit.

It's gonna turn out to be a little of both I'm sure. Spreads the cap hit and also puts a ton more dough in his pocket. His cap number this year was still only going to be $7.4 million but it was going to be $21.4 million in 2027 (not sure about 2026). Probably just some small savings this year but some bigger ones the next two. And he probably never actually plays under this exact deal by 2028 (or even for the Eagles by then possibly. But we shall see).

Will be interesting to see what they do to replace Gainwell and maybe use Saquon a little less next year. A fully healthy Jalen in the running game would also help in that regard (though it might not help Jalen).

3/$51M is higher than I thought. I figured they could get him at $45M to $48M.

Baun was so good last year that it was hard to judge his value.

Going to sound funny, but I think Burks is almost a must sign also as I don’t think Dean is expected back at training camp. Depends on whether they think Trotter Jr can fill in.

The problem is if Hunt replaces Sweat and Ojomo replaces Williams, who replaces Hunt and Ojomo? Gotta hit in the draft or on some inexpensive FAs.

I think Baun, Burks, and Dean, in that order are all plus linebackers, but I think they benefited a lot in playing behind the Eagles defensive line, both keeping OL off them and allowing the team to use a 4-man rush so often. If both Williams and Sweat are gone, I don't expect our linebackers to look as good as they did this past season.

Dean will be out at the start of the year, maybe longer, and since barely over 50% of patella ruptures return to previous levels of performance, it's hard to count on him of next year or going forward. Burks is a FA who has yet to sign. Right now it's Baun, Trotter, Jr, and Van Sumeran. Burks would be a nice signing for them.

Agreed. Not only benefitted from the dominant DL, but also the much improved secondary too. There has been a lot of debate on signing Williams or Baun. Obviously, the Eagles chose Baun because he plays a position they have failed to draft or develop talent at consistently, but also because he was cheaper. I like Baun and am glad we kept him.

Williams is a beast and he would have been my priority. He is exactly the type of ascending young player that is worth spending good money on and could help keep the DL dominant paired with Carter.

I think we've seen the best of Sweat so I'm ok letting him walk. He won in the end though as he stayed and won a SB while Reddick was shipped out and had a miserable season in NY. I can only imagine how Reddick feels.
