Even before this 'incident' the critique in the Eagles' media regarding the team's 'feckless' passing game was gaining steam. This is on Hurts and the offensive play calling. I think Hurts was spooked by the early season rash of turnovers and that the coaches impressed upon him that eliminating turnovers was Job #1. He seems unwilling to risk a turnover by anticipating his receiver's route. His time to release the ball has increased. He is slowest in league. Part of this in the last game was they were playing one of the worst run-stopping teams in the league and clearly had decided to emphasize the run.
I think another problem is the RPO. The other teams have figured this out and it too often results in Hurts running and being stuffed, often for a loss. I think it also diverts Hurts' attention from the pass game as he is evaluating his run opportunity. Except for success on QB draw play and tush push, Hurts' designed or RPO runs are an overall big negative to the offense. The RPO also leads to linemen down field when Hurts passes. It handicaps our excellent O-line. Hurts has done extremely well running on broken plays, capitalizing on what the D gives him. He should limit his runs to that. It will also reduce the injury risk.
This past Sunday's game was a terrible one for the O against a poor team missing their best rusher. Holding the ball too long still led to 4 sacks, which disrupted drives. Saquon likely would have had more success with a larger share of downfield passes to unload the box.
It almost seems as though Hurts is playing though an injury to his passing arm.
