Agree, that's where the hometown discount will come in, assuming he is still playing well, he will only be in his early 30's, so a third contract will be feasible and they can void the final year of the deal and do a similar thing where they front load the signing bonus and make it cap friendly. Plus, the salary cap is going up, so Howie should still have flexibility to continues to improve the team over the next few years.
The more I'm thinking about it, now that it is looking like Carter most likely won't drop to the Eagles, I'm inclined for them to trade back a few spots and take Robinson. A stud three down RB, who is also a good pass catcher would take a lot of burden off of Hurts and make teams have to play honest and open up the field for Brown, Smith and Goedert. The argument that you shouldn't take RBs in the first round is kind of different for the Eagles, because top RBs don't usually go to teams that just came off a Super Bowl appearance, are conference favorites again and have a top 10 pick. I understand that other positions are more likely to make it to a second contract, but they would have him under control for 5 years and that is the current Super Bowl window for the Eagles, so if he doesn't get a second contract, no big whoop. To pair him with this offensive line and receiving core for the next few years would be the death bell for defenses around the league. It would be like the year we got T.O., they would just be putting up 30 every game.
