CJ Gardner Johnson is signing a one year deal with the Lions for $8m. This is unfortunate, this seems like a deal that the eagles could have matched or beat, so the deleted tweet "the disrespect is real" may indicate that this was an emotional decision, or maybe the Lions are going to let him play CB where he can prove himself for a larger contract.

Eagles offered him 3 years, $24M, but weighted at the end of the contract so that a renegotiation would be needed after 2 years. A solid offer in the safety market, but he preferred a prove-it deal with the Lions, which would have impacted the 2023 Cap.

Eagles with a couple more signings reported. Eagles sign former Saints safety Justin Evans and former Bears LB Nicholas Morrow.

Since the CB position has been settled for at least a couple years, I'd be happy if the Eagles dropped back a few spots from the 10 pick and moved out of the 30th pick to add more picks. They are light on picks this year and will all the players leaving, Howie has done a decent job keeping talent in house, but there are still many positions of need (LB, DT, DE, S, P, WR). Here are the picks they have right now for 2023 and 2024.

EAGLES 2023 NFL DRAFT PICKS

1 - No. 10 overall (from New Orleans Saints)
1 - No. 30 overall (Eagles’ own pick)

3 - No. 94 overall (Eagles’ own pick
7 - No. 219 overall (from Minnesota Vikings through Houston Texans)
7 - No. 248 (Eagles’ own pick)

EAGLES 2024 NFL DRAFT PICKS

1 - Eagles’ own pick
2 - Eagles’ own pick
2 - from New Orleans Saints
3 - Eagles’ own pick
(3 - Projected compensatory pick for losing Javon Hargrave)
4 - Eagles’ own pick
5 - from Minnesota Vikings (can elevate to 4th if Jalen Reagor stat thresholds met)
5 - Eagles’ own pick
(5 - Projected compensatory pick for losing Isaac Seumalo)
(5 - Projected compensatory pick for losing Andre Dillard)
6 - Eagles’ own pick OR from Tennessee Titans (the more favorable selection)
(6 - Projected compensatory pick for losing C.J. Gardner-Johnson)

Howie should have a busy few days at the draft...

Strongly disagree. They are a top team. They need quality over quantity. Late picks have very little chance of helping this year. They need to use both first rounders and the second on guys with a chance to help now. They have plenty of picks. They get three developmental gambles in addition to the three guys to help sooner. #30 is a good pick to be opportunistic and draft someone who falls in the draft. #10 should be a very solid guy. Trade down and you get a less solid guy -- more questions, less ready. They need a solid contributor out of this pick.

You can disagree all you like, but the Eagles could still get a player they want at say 14 or 15 and gain 2nd and maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick for 10 and they could get another 2nd round pick plus at least a 3rd or 4th for 30. If they would end up with 5 or 6 of the the top 100 picks, they would still be able to draft a bunch of good players.

Eagles tend to redshirt most rookies, so they can go upside over NFL ready.
What positions would a rookie start on this team?
Not DL, probably not LB, safety? Nowhere on the offense.

By the playoffs, redshirt rookies are done with their redshirt season and can step in.

LB and safety are possibilities. 'Starter' doesn't mean much on the D-line, with the rotations. A draftee could contribute to the rotation at either DT or edge. On offense, a WR could start. There is a hole there and a WR can come on.

A top safety could start right away, and a DT could certainly get into the rotation right away. A LB probably would be a back up and special teamer year one, but a WR to upgrade over Watkins and replace Pascal would probably play right away.

This is a loaded question for multiple reasons. First, the Eagles don't redshirt players, but simply look ahead to expiring contracts. Second, Jordan Davis, DeVonta Smith, and Landon Dickerson weren't redshirted (despite his injury.. it was always a value pick). Third, Bijan Robinson would be the immediate starter this season. Fourth, if you consider rotational players on the DL starters, then there are quite a few (if you don't think that someone like Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, or even Myles Murphy wouldn't get much playing time, then "starter" is a term that doesn't really matter.

I think it depends on how the draft shakes out and who is available at 10 - with potentially 4 QBs going in the top 9 picks there could be a steal at the 10 spot and definitely a day one starter. They could also pick up a day one starter with their next two picks if things fall right.

I also don't think the value of dropping from 10 to 14 is picking up a second rounder, at least not this year. Future seconds are easier to acquire than current seconds because most GMs don't have the job security that Howie does, so he gets better value picking up draft picks in future drafts.

Last year's first round trades involving only picks:
WFT received pick 11
NO received 16, a 3rd (98) a 4th (120)

Lions received pick 12
Minnesota received pick 32, 2nd (34) and 3rd (66)

philly received 18, 3rd (101), 7th (237), 2023 1st, 2024 2nd
NO received 16, 19 and a 6th (194)

philly received 13
hou received 15, 4th (124), 2 fifths (162, 166)

KC receives 21
NE receives 29, 3rd (94), 4th (121)

Bal receives 25 and 4th (130)
Buf receives 23

Jets receive 26 and 3rd (101)
Titans receive 2nd (35), 3rd, 69) 5th (163)

TB receives 2nd (35), 4th (106), 6th (180)
Jax receives 27

If the team stays where they are, then I wouldn't hate Paris Johnson Jr if he's there.

Yes. He could replace Seumalo and be Lane Johnson's eventual successor. There are also edge rushers, and Wide Receiver Smith-Njigba would contribute immediately and improve the team.

I wouldn't think he'd cost that much. Look what they gave Penney.

If you can get him cheap, sure. He's probably anticipating revenge against Dallas. I just think he would have re-signed with Dallas if he were willing to sign the sort of contract it would make sense to give him. No doubt he could help at the right price, making 2024 a season to reload at RB.

I want no part of Zeke, his is cooked, even with our offensive line, he wouldn't be the Zeke we all remember, he's been cooked for the last season and a half. No thanks. The Eagles signed a safety today:
