So I watched a few videos of the new kickoffs.
I honestly think this is extremely exploitable. If the return team can āpullā a few players and overwhelm one side of the field, or even one area they might be able to create a breakaway. It looks possible. Special Teams Coordinators are about to become incredibly important, at least for a couple seasons until the options of āplaysā here are worked out. I like the increase in strategy and possibilities, but it may become way to easy to get a big return.
The other thing is if I was a kicking team coach I would tell my players if you see a bad kick, say coming down around the 25, ignore the ācanāt moveā and start early. The penalty will be better than the result. If they stay still it will be way too easy to ābreakā a runback with the returner starting that close to them.
I also suspect it is possible that the return team will become 2 returners and every offensive lineman on the roster and then DTās that can block to fill it out if needed. One or two pancake blocks might be a TD.
Going to be interesting.
