LD, they played up until the Raiders game trying to build a passing system. It sucked, and most fans hated it. Then they did what they had the ability to do.

I don't agree with this. The fanbase opened their eyes to a running game with the Lions game. Another awful team.

Either way, the team needs to develop the passing game/system and the best way to do that is to try to develop it instead of turning to the running game against bad teams. All of the sudden the team is down multiple TDs and people wonders why they can't get out of it against competent teams? Is this really a surprise?

It remains an open question of whether an offense led by a running QB can win it all in today's NFL. If one does, it will have to be an efficient passing offense that uses the run to set up big plays through the air.

Wilson has won a SB and Kyler seems like a budding talent. It seems like the question is to whether coaches can embrace these players.

And honestly... Hurts has a better resume than Sirianni.

I think LD's point is interesting though. That they could have gone 7-10 while better trying to develop Hurts and the passing offense instead of playing to their strengths with a running game that was the best way to win (whether against good teams or bad) when winning really didn't need to be the goal this year.

You explained it much better than I would have. Beating bad teams doesn't mean much to me, but you can lose to bad teams without tanking by trying to build a competitive team. That doesn't mean you are trying to lose... simply trying to build a system or develop a young, talented QB. I am not sure that's what happened this year.

He had some good/bad things to say about Hurts against the Bucs earlier in the season:

Most of his comments about Hurts were that he could have sometimes made a better read and that he should have trusted the pocket (although he did praise his ability making a play when leaving the pocket).

What stuck out to me were his comments were what Wentz should be looking out pre and post snap, while being confused about what the Eagles were trying to do on offense.

I can't kill the Eagles for today. They were never supposed to be there. They started the year stating it was a transitional year, then started 2-5. To make the playoffs under those conditions was a n unexpected cherry on top.

Several questions were answered, some were not.

is the head coach a good hir?, Signs point to yes.
Is Hurts the QB they need? Unless a great deal for a veteran QB comes available, Hurts has at least done enough to earn another year to show more improvement as a passer.
Is Gannon a good defensive coordinator? Signs point to no.

As far as Howie, this last draft is one of his best. He still needs to show me something though, and needs to have a great 2022 draft. He also needs to bite the bullet and admit his mistakes and cut JJaw and Reager, and use the cap space wisely.

Fans are seriously underrating the 2018 draft class. Goedert, Maddox, Sweat, Pryor, and Mailata.... when they didn't have a 1st round pick (which was largely a result from a trade that netting them a SB).

you're right LD about that draft. and this past one was pretty good as well with smith and Dickerson (i think he has a shot to be all pro at some point). That is why howie cannot screw up this draft by trading out (Maybe one for a high '23 one). this team needs so much. but they are pretty close. They need a good edge rusher and more from the middle. the 49ers are most;y only rushing 4 against the cowboys with a decent deal of pressure.

I was surprised to see that they let the Practice Squad WR wear #17. They should not, it should be retired, but failing that can it not be worn by someone who hits someone on his knees on the ground at least. That was a very dumb play, and #17 shouldn’t do that.

We were blown out by a much better team. We had chances, but frankly any team that has a roster spot fir JJAW all season doesn’t have enough talent. The bottom of our roster is laughable, we have a few guys that almost surely played their last NFL game today.

I think they did a great job of extending the correct guys, now get another good draft and make a few smart moves and hopefully we take another step forward. Sadly, we once again have a ton ($22M) of dead money (Malik Jackson was a big mistake).

I really like the 2021 draft as well (even if I think the current offense is wasting Smith). I was apprehensive of the Dickerson pick, but after seeing his tape and how quickly he was recovering it wasn't a surprise that fans were quickly tight-lipped.

Not sure I agree about trading out of the 2022 draft. It's tough to hit on 3 mid-late 1st round picks.I think a LB (Dean or Lloyd is a must), but aside from that it gives the team a lot of flexibility. I was high on Neal (who the Eagles might not even need) and Stingley (who the Eagles definitely need), which is why I was disappointed that the Dolphins and Eagles kept winning. I didn't want the Eagles to lose, but would not have been disappointed as I felt their wins were fairly hollow.

One could argue the 2018 draft also netted Miles Sanders;, would make it look even better. The Eagles had a 1st that year but traded it (Lamar Jackson) for the Goedert pick (had to make a side deal to move up 3 slots in front of Dallas), a 4th (Avonte Maddox) and a 2019 2nd (Miles Sanders).

I suppose that if "Screw Up" Howie screwed that one up it was just in thinking he already had his franchise QB in the fold.

This is somewhat analogous to my question. This season was a surpise success. However, was it the first step of a successful retool (not rebuild) or fools' gold like Ray Rhodes's and Chip Kelly's first seasons? Remember the great first impressions they made.

I missed all but 3 quarters of the game and DVR'd it. watching it now. wow, just pitch and catch for brady. 10 yard cushion from all that i'm seeing. way too easy. after yesterday's performance has Gannon's and Kellen Moore's light, dimmed a little bit for a head coaching position?

Kind of feels like yesterday was also a reminder that the NFC East has been a weak division for at least three years now. Better with Dak, but Cowboys weren't much more tested than the Eagles, just better (for one thing they went 6-0 in division to Eagles' 3-3, mostly by beating the Eagles of course).

Mike McCarthy really is not a good HC, he just happened to win a SB with a great player. TheCowboys have impressive talent on offense, particularly in the skill positions, has a greatly improved defense with the best rookie defender

it was one of those too-clever calls that you can only do if the QB is absolutely sure/ready to get the ball set and spiked. it probably didn't make a difference either way (in addition to the fact that they really lost the game early).

But, I think in retrospect the Cowboys is who the Eagles might have liked to play. The two losses and the fact that it's an emotional rival obfuscated the fact that the W-L records didn't necessarily reflect that fact that Tampa and LA are likely much better teams. And probably Arizona too.

I think the QB sneak play has merit, but if you've been practicing it all year and don't know that the ball needs to be spotted, then that's on the coaches.

It doesn't matter. I am in team lol McCarthy and think he was holding GB back, but the Cowboys would still easily beat the Eagles. Yes, the Cowboys might have had the same schedule flaws that the Eagles had, but they were competitive against strong teams and pretty much destroyed the Eagles the first game..

The Eagles have a lot of talent, but really aren't a good team.

Well yes, they likely would have still lost, but it probably would have been more competitive. Of course almost any game would have been. Dak + McCarthy probably have made more mistakes than Brady/Arians (not that the Eagles duo was any better).

Hard for me to have much higher expectations for next year. They will be better, but in the end Hurts is still going to be a work in progress. The question still remains whether he gets to another level or is replaced by 2023.
