Eagles 2020 Offseason

Too bad this thread needed to start so soon, the 2020 season ended with a valiant attempt to overcome injuries, but suffered one too many to advance in the playoffs. Good job to win the division though, but the team ends the season with way more questions than answers.

The Eagles need,help in many positions, and Howie will have to do a lot better drafting and hitting on free agents next year. The Eagles will have a lot of picks (10 at the moment), with their first pick being at 21:

Eagles have their own 1st (21), 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th picks next year, they also are projected to get a 3rd and two 4th round compensation picks, as well as New England's 5th and Atlanta's 6th round picks via trades

Eagles are going to need 2-3 WR, they need S help as Jenkins and McCleod are not getting any younger. They need CB help, the need LB help. They'll need at least one back up QB, they need another pass rusher.

We'll see what, if any, changes are made to the coaching staff.

Free Agency begins at 4:00pm on March 18. The draft is on April 23rd to 25th.

The draft, more then ever, is so important here. The Eagles remind me of the 2008-2011 Phillies. Win the Championship and then slowly regress. The Eagles team for 2019/2020 was one of the oldest in the league. They have to get younger and they have to bring in - via draft or FA - impact talent at key spots that can keep their window open.

They need help at WR, CB, LB, and S. They probably need to draft depth pieces for the OL and DL. Given Wentz's injury history, they need a legit backup QB.

Higgins or Jefferson would be great additions. Eagles need someone with size and speed to stretch the field. DJax has speed but lacks size and, now, maybe durability.

What they need most is to replace whomever was making the draft-day decisions. Was that Howie? If Douglas, already accomplished. If Doug, need to give him less weight in the draft room. We don't have a primo pick, but lots of picks, so even first rounder won't be 'obvious' -- we need to do vastly better at identifying talent.. Also, the team needs to get over its firm belief that LBs don't really matter much.

I don't think the field-stretcher needs size. If healthy, Desean is just fine. What counts most is tracking the ball in flight and making adjustments near point of reception. Desean has been very good at that. I think our drafters have proven they don't know how to evaluate a college WR. That's serious, because good veteran WRs are terribly expensive. to get in FA. Agholor and Arcega-Whiteside were not low-value draft slots. Hollins was just bad.

One other point of note. With the rest of the NFC East, the Eagles had a strength in the coaching department. The Cowboys just hired McCarthy, the Redskins hired Ron Rivera. Giants have yet to make a hire. Up until now, I thought the Eagles had an advantage in that Pederson was the best coach in the NFC East. Now, that may no longer a given.

That is an excellent point Lawman. Who knows when the eagles will get their chance back in the playoffs. each year is never a given thing and now that these coaches have been hired, it makes it much tougher. The eagles made there bed with wentz and now have to sleep on it. will he be good enough to lead the eagles past these teams now that will be better. this could go back to the 80's and 90's when the NFC east was arguably the strongest division in the NFC.

The coaches are better but the front offices aren't. The reason Doug (and Andy) are such good coaches is because of the support they get from ownership, and because they know how to run a staff. Which is also why we may yet see Bienemy in New Jersey.

Let's see:

Eagles - Pederson/Wentz

Cowboys - McCarthy/Prescott

Redskins - Rivera/Haskins

Giants - Judge/Jones

I think the latter two are too hard to establish right now, given the lack of a track record on the part of thei respective QB (and the fact that the NYG have no coach in place). As between the first two, I like the Eagles better, but we shall see how long that lasts. Also, be interesting to see what, if anything, the Eagles do with OC/DC positions and what the Cowboys do.

Jenkins wants to be paid, he might have to go, he'll be 33 next year and there was already a small dip in his play this year, that being said, the Eagles are so thin at safety, he kind of has them over a barrel...

I think I read somewhere that Jenkins is the 8th highest paid safety. I am thinking that is not bad for his level of play when compared to other safeties around the league. We need to draft his replacement and sign one in FA.

Giants hire NE special teams coach Judge, with Garrett rumored to be OC. They lost Rhule to Carolina before he was supposed to interview.

I'll be surprised if the Eagles make any major offensive coaching changes. Wentz broke several records this year despite the depleted roster. And the HC is still the play-caller. Continuity is probably valuable and no established or rising offensive coach is going to come here w/o being in charge.

At some point I am guessing Duce Staley is going to get a OC offer, maybe this offseason. I would prefer to drop Groh and elevate Duce, who has coached the part of the roster that has really stood out as overachieving in many ways.

Duce was given the title of assistant head coach, but I think that was just a appeasement for him not getting the OC chance. I obviously don’t know, but I assume Groh has more say and we might have to switch that to keep Duce.

Pederson said Groh and Walch will be back. He was more evasive about Schwartz (who's up for the Browns job).

I get the sense that the writers think Jeffrey's Eagle's career is over, though it will be easier said than done. He's the big financial drag though, and (it's been implied) was one of the locker room problems too.
