These are all excuses. Wentz was bad. À 2nd round rookie, whom some had said 2nd round QBs are backups, was better than a supposed franchise QB.

Some have scoffed when I said Hurts was a franchise QB. Technically correct, but he's what a franchise hopes to get with a top 5 pick. He's so similar to Kyler Murray, who is arguably a top asset in the NFL, but at a fraction of the price. Giving crap to Howie for drafting a top asset and trading a negative asset for decent draft capital is laughable.

EDIT: the eagles drafted a WR in the 1st round and a QB in the 2nd. Rodgers complained about the team drafting a QB in the 1st round. He went on to win the MVP. Eagles fans really have to forget 2017 Wentz.

Don't see how you can argue his point about Howie though. I think it is especially compelling when you really dig down into the post-Reid (and Banner) era, that it's one of failure with a lucky championship (including how close they came to losing earlier in the playoffs) rather than one that suggests they are one of the league's consistently good organizations. Not that most other NFC organizations are any better!

That Wentz did not handle Foles well, or handle Hurts as well as Rodgers handled a (not really at all similiar) situation, is just another massive failure by the Eagles. They were the ones who researched his character heavily before paying the price to draft him. They were the ones who gave him the extension. And then still thought they should draft Hurts.

The trade is decent but there's no scenario where taking the largest dead cap hit in NFL history is a good move. Much worse than drafting the wrong wide receiver. And it's unlikely Hurts will win anything - or even have a winning record - with the team he now inherits over the next two seasons.

It's not just on Howie, but you can't fire the owner.

Rogers already had a solid team in front of him Wentz didn't. Still, I don't see how you can take the totality of what I've written as supportive of Wentz. It is true, however, the Howie supplied an inferior supporting cast. The Eagles may be able to develop Hurts into an NFL starting QB. From what I'm reading, that is unlikely, both because his arm isn't strong enough and because the Eagles will seek their starting QB in the 2021 or 2022 draft, with Hurts as backup or trade bait. Hurts proved he is a very dangerous runner from QB. He did not prove he's a very effective passer. Of course, he suffered from the same poor supporting cast that Wentz did. Hurts caught the Saints by surprise, but as other teams had more tape to view, he was less effective.

Please submit the offensive upgrades around Rodgers the last 3 years. The only recent high addition in the draft was AJ Dillard? Wow. People seem to have a short memory for how bad the Packers were 3-4 years ago and added on very little.

The Eagles have signed and drafted multiple high picks at the WR, TE, and OL position in very recent drafts and FA. To say Howie didn't do so is ludicrous. The Packers gave Rodgers nothing recently and he was the MVP.

So it's unlikely that Hurts can be an average QB, yet he was better than Wentz in the same scenario. He was a rookie. Please explain how the Wentz trade wasn't a home run.

I am very much of the opinion that if you don't have a franchise you should draft one, so I am fine if the Eagles take one at #6, but I would personally stick it out with Hurts.

EDIT to add that the big upgrade the Packers did was firing McCarthy. I was so glad the Cowboys hired him.

This is a forum that embraces stats for baseball and I still find it crazy that advanced stats are ignored for other sports. Wentz was truly horrible last year, but Hurts got lucky against NO, AZ, and Dallas

Part of advanced stats is not putting too much weight on small samples. Wentz's 2016-2019 still outweighs his 2020 or Hurts' four games, especially considering the concussion.

And another part is not putting too much weight on small differences, regardless of whether you're looking at the stats where Hurts was better or worse. Maybe Hurts will be the better QB this season, I sure hope so, but Wentz didn't get traded because Hurts beat him out per se, he got traded because both he and the Eagles did a terrible job with the whole thing.

For me it's always about the GM and ownership, and even the GM doesn't matter if ownership isn't great. The Phillies have proven that for the last three years, we'll see if that changes this time around. What I found convincing about Murphy's column is that if the Eagles don't get lucky with Foles and the caliber of oppostion they faced in the NFC, we're probably not talking about any of this, because w/o that Super Bowl either the Eagles would have already cleaned house or Wentz wouldn't have wound up having the issues he did. Now he gets to play somewhere where he doesn't have to see a statue to remind him of his worst injury and diminished status with both the team and the fans.

The explanation that makes the most sense to me is that in 2020 Wentz was still suffering concussion after-effects. I've had athletes who couldn't play at their previous levels for over a year after having been concussed, and the hits they took were nowhere near what Clowney (screw him forever) did to Wentz. It's way easier for me to buy a concussion affecting his performance than all these psychological factors, although it's clear the psychological factors were the primary determinants in the resolution of the problem (causing Wentz to want out).

If in the next twelve games with the Colts, Wentz throws fifteen interceptions; fumbles the ball ten times and loses four of them; reacts slowly to coverages and holds the ball too long, we'll just see how much all of these great assets that Indianapolis has works out.

Reminds me of when the Phillies traded Schilling to the Diamondbacks. Schilling had his no-trade clause restricting a trade to a list of six teams and the Diamondbacks were the only team on the list interested in trading for him so the 'Backs were basically able to name their price.

You are correct that Schilling earned his no trade clause he took a deal for less money with the Phillies in exchange for the no trade clause. It was fairly bartered, because he knew that the lower contract made him highly tradeable.

My first shot at an Eagles draft this year:

I am sure he just fell and it is only a 7th round pick, but I cant see us even considering a Punter Johnson had a bad 2nd half of last season, he dropped way down in the rankings, but he was 2nd as late as week 10 or so. I would rather take a flyer on pretty much anything but Punter.

I also think they must go Safety fairly early, 1-3rd round. We have 1 starter who was hurt pretty badly at the end of last year and a bunch of maybe's, most of which have proven they are not starters. It of course depends if we resign Mills and/or find a cheap FA.

The two big contracts were Byron Jones and Robert Quinn. Boys got four picks - 1@ rounds 2 thru 6. The 2nd and 3rd were no doubt those contracts. Randell Cobb also got a pretty decent contract (70% guaranteed) from Houston so that may have been the fifth, after that it was a lot of ins and outs. League says they issued 5 picks for minority hiring; given that the boys turned over their coaching staff the sixth (which is at the very bottom of the picks) may have been related to coaching decisions.

Love your picks- From your lips to God's ear! Only change I would make is to select a good safety higher than round 6. That is a key pick to make the other Dbacks functional. (Yes, I'll settle for functional.)

Put my trader Howie cap on and drafted down, still got Chase, then used the extra picks I got in the trades and traded back in the 1st to grab Pitts. Pure fantasy on both scenarios, but fun!

Actually, I think I would trade every pick to come out of the draft with Chase and Pitts.

Strangly, no, I didn't break 50000, I think to do so, you have to do a lot of trades to gain more picks in the first four rounds and hit mostly A+ and A ratings on your picks.
