Remember how the contract required the Phillies to seek revenue from their TV partners? I don't remember the details, but I know the four-year free agent contract pushed them to their limits.

$3,2 million dollars. At the time, making Rose the highest paid player in baseball. Just $800K per season.

The Pete Rose documentary on hbo is worth the watch. Sometimes it’s not an easy thing to appreciate the art in spite of the artist, but I sure did love his game and all it meant to Philadelphia. He made the concept of “see the ball, hit the ball” look as easy as anyone ever did.

Hard to tell what to make of it. Perhaps it's the shock of losing someone he was close to and Schmidt could always be a bit awkward in expressing himself. Or, perhaps after he stuck his neck out so much for Rose in his effort to get reinstated and recognized by the Phillies, he felt he got his head lopped off by more embarrassing Rose confessions.

From my point of view I recognize that the Phillies and Schmidt needed to release statements and was glad that they did the bare minimum.

I don't get what's supposed to be wrong with Schmidt's statement.

He's sad, he's thinking of his family, he says nice things about him and shares some personal aspects. What else did we want him to state?

I know in the past he's opined that Rose's sense of determination spread through the clubhouse and that he didn't think that the Phillies would have gotten over the hump without him and, on a personal level, he said Rose encouraged and sometimes goaded him to be the best player he could. It's a little surprising that his statement was a bit muted and I wonder if he has lingering embarrassment over how his advocacy for Rose last decade blew up in his face after we learned more tawdry details of Rose's life.

One other forgotten moment of Rose heroics in the 1980 WS was when Rose had Dickie Noles's back after Jim Frey ran out of the dugout complaining to the homeplate umpire after Noles brushed back George Brett. That was a very pivotal moment in that WS.

The great actor John Amos has passed away. Notable for his roles James Evans on Good Times, Percy Fitzwallace on The West Wing and Mr. MacDowell in Coming to America.

I think it was just a deliberately fast and short statement. Designed to be shared on social media, even. I don't recall any lingering embarrassment tbh, Rose was welcomed by the former players just two years ago, long after his WoF induction was cancelled (though Schmidt wasn't there because of COVID). It was only when Alex Coffey rightly brought it up that it got awkward for the team.

I'm sure the Phillies - as the issuer of the statement and Schmidt's employer - were happy to keep it muted though.

From my one encounter with MJS I got the idea he didn't like to repeat himself, he's the type to think he doesn't need to say something he's said a hundred times already.

On a side note, one network piece this morning was showing the Rose highlights, the VO said "then he went to the Phillies" and it was a shot of Luzinksi slugging the hit that Rose scored on with the big collision in the 1980 NLCS but they cut out before there was a frame of Rose on the screen, so if you didn't know any better you might think, wow, he really got huge in his Phillie years.

I don't think his last appearance in the booth on alumni weekend endeared anyone in the organization (on top of everything else).
