Whatever else he was, he did help the Phillies win their first championship in 97 years. People can point to stats, but I know that Schmidt says that he taught the players how to win.

Only one guy I ever saw play would have been there to catch the ball out of Boone’s glove. The Hustle thing was real.

RIP. Not a great guy, but lots of Sports Superstars are not, and he was just that.

Boone's take was it was more of a play for Rose, was waiting to be called off and wasn't.

Honestly, sounds like an excuse for dropping it. I have seen many catchers make that play. What player WANTS to be called off? Boone is a great player, but that sounds like something he should regret saying.

And we've probably seen the player coming in towards a ball call off the guy going out from the other direction and catch it with less drama a lot more often, but it did make for a memorable moment!

Pete Rose taught me one of life's many lessons. Rose's 41 game hitting streak was broken when Gene Garber struck him out in his last at bat in the ninth inning that game. Rose was quoted as complaining that "Garber was f****** pitching me like it was the ninth inning of the World Series." Garber was my favorite Phillies pitcher and I was a hot headed teen, so I took umbridge and swore an oath never to watch another game that Rose played it. That summer the Phils signed Rose. Never say Never.
