Zonca also served as a mentor to many Reading Phillies players from 2002-09, offering them advice when he felt they needed a lift.

“He’d talk to the guys and tell them stories,” said Rob Hackash, former public relations director for the Reading Phillies. “He really had a good grasp of how hard the game is. Guys would enjoy talking to him because he’d bring them up.

“He wouldn’t just talk to a guy who was going good. Sometimes he’d find humanity in the struggle. He was almost like a fatherly or grandfatherly figure.”

His dark complexion led some to believe he was actually American Indian but his lineage was Filipino American on his father’s side and Irish-American on his mother’s.

Lots of people claim to be Native American and aren't (now called "Pretendians"). Doesn't sound like Gabriel did, people just didn't know any better.

He was the Eagles QB when I was first old enough to follow the Eagles so I loved him. Then Jaws came along of course.

Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues

He was the last surviving member of the Moody Blues' original lineup. Two members of the "classic" lineup, Justin Hayward and John Lodge, are still performing.

The Moodies were (and are) kind of the "foundation band" of my music-listening journey. From the late 60s through...well, now... they're a core part of any playlist I assemble (excluding a few that are pure baroque/classical, or just jazz). From cuts on Days of Future Passed through English Sunset, there are gems on every album. Pinder's contributions are a good part of that.

That's an interesting perspective, Julio. Of course, many of the musicians from my youth, many of whom I saw perform, have passed away recently. But many died very young, and I'm almost surprised when I realize some of them are still around.

I remember watching a rerun of Gilligan's Island as a kid, and seeing two names from my baseball cards in the closing credits as playing natives: Jim Lefebvre and Al Ferrara. Even at the age of nine or so, I realized they had to be the same guys I had cards of on the Dodgers (and I realized where Hollywood is).

Happily, those old Dodgers do not have to officially be in this thread yet.
