Joel desn't get that deal done in any way shape or form probably and Sixers also don't have tons of picks to offer. Here's one deal that was suggested.

Mavericks receive: Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, Eric Gordon, three first-round picks (Clippers' in 2028, Philadelphia's in 2031, least favorable of Philadelphia's, Houston's or Oklahoma City's in 2026), one first-round swap (from Philadelphia in 2026).

It seems like what we're seeing (in hindsight obviously) is that it didn't have to be Paul George or bust for the Sixers, the team certainly couldn't have been any worse up until now without him, and there are lots of guys available (all flawed but so is he). Though, I guess you can't do any of these deals without having a star players to include back (or one from a second team), if only for cap reasons.

Yup. Technically March but of course you can't make trades then. Just goes to show you that was not remotely a consideration when they extended him, though I guess you have to think their tardiness in doing so meant they weren't sure they would.

George is clearly who you trade if you're actually playing in this market.

Martin was an atrocious signing. Made no sense if we had Embiid. What we needed from tgat mid-level exemption and PF position is rebounding, and he is a terrible rebounder mostly because he isn’t really a PF.

Giving a 2nd rounder for him is something, not much (2nd rounders are often traded for cash on draft day), but at least it gets him off the roster.

Grimes is a younger version of martin but is a better shooter...and getting our own second rounder back is probably a good thing.

Yeah they got a lot more than a 2nd rounder. Grimes will presumably be re-signed, and for less money too.

I still don't necessarily think deleting Martin makes the team better since he was acquired for his post-season history and performance against Boston but since the team stinks and he's been hurt and there might not be much of a post-season, doesn't matter.

The bigger question now is do they let Yubi go when the Bulls are probably not going to hold on to their play-in spot.

We may still see some moves that are less about tanking (which is still hard) or buying (still probably dumb) as cap savings.

Even though sources said the Sixers are gagging at the interest, the belief around the league is he’ll only get moved for a home-run deal.

The Sixers aren’t above making a deal before the trade deadline. They’ll probably look to work the fringes with moves that won’t set them back this season. But don’t expect them to give up on George just yet — unless they’re offered something they’d be foolish to refuse.

The Martin trade also opens up enough salary space for them to offer Yabu the full MLE, not the cap limited one, which at least puts the in play for resigning him. One of my favorite new players!

And the Caleb Martin signing was not horrible, since Morey knew at the time he was on a good, tradable contract and obtained more value in this trade. Money for Yabu, a high second round pick, and Grimes, a good 3 and D guard. And at 6'4", Grimes can share the defensive backcourt responsibilities with either Maxey or McCain when there is a taller guard on the opposing team. I like this trade a lot, and it depended on having Martin to begin with.
