Bowden mentions Dylan Carlson as a player that the Phillies are specifically interested in. No idea what the price is but he is being shopped. Would not be unlike the Marsh trade though Carlson has a little more service time (3 years of arbitration, free agent in 2027). Switch hitter that is better against LHP. Like Marsh he can play CF but is better in a corner.

Well, that wouldn't be surprising, but it would be really disappointing.

There's some serious talent out there and the Phils need to do more than rearrange the deck furniture. They need something to spark the team, like we expected Turner to do, and we're still expecting. You know the names.

I think you misread that post (the double-negatives are always tricky!). Someone not on the radar, to me, means someone bigger/better than we are expecting, maybe even someone who is not widely rumored to be available. But that is just LSP dreaming/speculating in any case.

Of course, your expectations are probably too high, if you are expecting anything more than what happened last year. It will probably be about the same: an OF, starting pitcher depth, possibly a bullpen piece (but only because of the recent injuries, that was definitively not an area of need before the All-Star break).

Given the Phillies are paying 5 starters who are 30 or older $20+, it behooves them to hold on to their top young talent - if this team doesn't turn it around this season, I vote for a retool this offseason, not another "let's go spend another $40M in FA and come up short again."

Realmuto, Schwarber and Castellanos are going to be albatrosses going forward.
Hopefully, Turner can turn it around or they're really screwed.

But they need Harper at first, one of Schwarber or Castellanos at DH and the other one gone, and commit to the young OFs, Marsh, Pache, Rojas, and De La Cruz, Muzzioti and eventually Crawford. If you can't get hitting from your OF, at least get good defense and reduce the stress on your pitching staff.

You can't blame the pitching staff, while Nola and Wheeler have underperformed a little, with the addition of Sanchez and Ranger back, they have a solid 5 man rotation, while the pen has been good for the most part.

I don't disagree with your (entirely predictable) opinion but there's no way all five of the six young players you named above will still be on the 40 next year even if one isn't traded at the deadline. Heck, you'd probably have to package one of them with Schwarber or Castellanos.

There is a middle ground here and it's the same ground Dombrowski walked last year.

Also agree they don't need to spend big in free agency next year but they are going to need to re-sign or replace Nola.

We'll see if Harper really stays at 1B. Ironically if he does it's a lot less likely they trade Castellanos or Schwarber. If he doesn't you almost have to move one of them.

Song is also still a complicating factor here as far as what pitching moves might get made at the deadline (be it a relief arm or a depth starter who either comes a relief arm or makes Sanchez one).

Relief pitching seems like a bigger need than it was two weeks or a month ago (as we watch Seranthony here. Edit: okay, he did all right).

Boy, it is huh? Like if we traded Abel and Rojas. But they're not just trying to show it! If they are keeping him they have to go for it. They've probably got to make the playoffs to get him thinking about coming back long-term, not just try to make them. They should be trading him.

Ky Bush and C Edgar Quero have not had good years. Quero is of course a very promising 20 year old catching prospect at AA after the year he had last year in the California league, but he doesn't look like anything special defensively- they may have traded high on him.

Well you don't start a rebuild, even a long one, by trading two of your Top 5 (or even top three?) prospects from a thin system (even if they are having down years). You could have gotten four prospects for Ohtani.

Yes. but if they are opening the window of opportunity in the here and now as wide as possible....

The Angels organization has never struck me as a particularly smart one.
