I reckon to win a long series against a good team, the bottom of the order needs to show. Segura has to some extent and a few other guys have had at least one good game, but overall the day care has not been a factor (along with Castellanos).

Wheeler also got hit in the leg pretty hard in game #5 on Sunday. An extra day to recover from whatever kind of bruise he got isn’t a bad thing.

Nola had one less postseason start (and cumulative stress) also. Better to go with Nola first since they each only get 2 starts in the Series.

I guess the one downside is if a starter were used to close in Game 7 you'd probably want Wheeler throwing heat for 1 inning instead of Nola needing to have a good feel for his curve - but hopefully it does not come to that. And the entire bullpen will get the rest day before game 6, so nobody would have to pitch 3 days in a row (the reason Eflin did NOT pitch in the last game).

Nola pitches much better at home. Bring the game one starter means he will start game five at home. If he started game two, both would be in Houston.

Yeah but that was a meaningless game for the Astros. Still a great performance (and all his other starts were on the road down the stretch and in the WC round too, seeing as how all the games were).

If we really get to Game 7 and they are hurting for innings (a short Suarez start/an overworked bullpen/extras) I could see Nola pitching as many as two innings and Wheeler one.

Meaningless? They won the next two.

But they were still basically exhibition games for the Astros (and the last two were for both teams. Except the Astros needed to get work in before the bye whereas the Phillies had to rest).

I am not discounting what Nola did there but meaningful or not it was still just one game.

That said, Schillfan may be making up that stat, Nola's road numbers were better than his home numbers this year for the most part.

Looks like there is a chance that Sanchez will be activated. Article notes Hand's issues and also that Yordan Alvarez has more issues with pitchers like Sanchez than Hand. I would wonder about Falter too. If he is not going to start game 4 then I might be inclined to have Sanchez for Falter.

And Painter was on hand for a physical (nothing more) this past weekend. But he wanted to watch the games and brought his Dad. Love it.

1975: Flyers v Sabres
1967: 76ers v Warriors

This is interesting. The Astros do not have any left-handed relievers. But all the relievers they DO use don't have significant platoon splits. This is a tiny argument for Hall instead of Guthrie, but there is really no argument that Hall would do well either against these pitchers. Framber Valdez is left-handed so Vierling and probably Sosa should start against him. I think I would prefer Guthrie though for defense and potentially pinch-running if it came to that.

I've noticed that before. During that long quarter-century champioship drought between the '83 Sixers and the '08 Phillies, Philadelphia teams that played for championships routinely ran into the brick wall of dynasties, including in some cases emerging dynasties (1980 Islanders, 1997 Red Wings). It's hard to call the Astros a dynasty, except maybe an AL dynasty. All they have is one WC and that was five years ago. Also, the 2009 Yankee team was a standalone champion and that was their first WC since 2000 and first WS appearance since 2003 and they haven't been back to the WS since. The 2010's was the first decade in a century in which the Yankees did not appear in a WS.

The '83 Sixers was the only NBA team not named the Lakers or Celtics to win an NBA Championship from 1980-88,
