I think what you've done (locking game threads) is probably a good solution to that in general! Maybe always within 12 hours of the game ending, or at the moment the next game starts (approximately)? I realize there are still lingering granular things to talk about potentially but we could easily still be discussin the magic of Ranger, for instance, in this thread.
Yeah, I struggle with this - because there are game-related discussions that might continue, and I really don't want to squelch that.
If I were here more constantly, I could probably pick times when the conversation has died down (most of us do tend to sleep at night!), and thus not interrupt live discussions. It's been a hectic few days, though - there was one instance where I peeked in (iPad at the dinner table, while hosting family gathering) and thought, "I should redirect that." It was five or six hours later when I actually got back to the board, and posts that went up in the meantime made that effectively impossible.
Last evening... My spouse is getting ready for a solo exhibition of her artwork - about 50 pieces, at an assisted living venue in Gwynned. We spent the evening gathering work, preparing an inventory, checking tagging, packaging, some framing and wiring, etc. Real life. Today she's teaching a couple classes, so I have some downtime! Tomorrow morning we deliver. I would encourage you all to go see her work, but... It's an assisted living facility, and they still have some COVID restrictions, so it's not clear that visitors (other than those visiting residents) would be able to get in.
Nola had one less postseason start (and cumulative stress) also. Better to go with Nola first since they each only get 2 starts in the Series.
I guess the one downside is if a starter were used to close in Game 7 you'd probably want Wheeler throwing heat for 1 inning instead of Nola needing to have a good feel for his curve - but hopefully it does not come to that. And the entire bullpen will get the rest day before game 6, so nobody would have to pitch 3 days in a row (the reason Eflin did NOT pitch in the last game).
Yeah but that was a meaningless game for the Astros. Still a great performance (and all his other starts were on the road down the stretch and in the WC round too, seeing as how all the games were).
If we really get to Game 7 and they are hurting for innings (a short Suarez start/an overworked bullpen/extras) I could see Nola pitching as many as two innings and Wheeler one.
But they were still basically exhibition games for the Astros (and the last two were for both teams. Except the Astros needed to get work in before the bye whereas the Phillies had to rest).
I am not discounting what Nola did there but meaningful or not it was still just one game.
That said, Schillfan may be making up that stat, Nola's road numbers were better than his home numbers this year for the most part.
Going to game 4 of the World Series!
Owner of my company sent me a text and said do you have time to talk tonight. I was thinking crap I don’t really want to talk business at 9 but I should probably give him a call.
He answers and says hey man, I need you to make a decision - I'm thinking o no what off the wall thing are these guys thinking about doing. He says game 3 or game 4? I'm like what do you mean. He's like we're gonna send you + whoever else you want to game 3 or game 4. We’ll fly you up there. Get seats behind the Phillies dugout. And get you all a hotel for the night.
Notes from Gelb here:
Looks like there is a chance that Sanchez will be activated. Article notes Hand's issues and also that Yordan Alvarez has more issues with pitchers like Sanchez than Hand. I would wonder about Falter too. If he is not going to start game 4 then I might be inclined to have Sanchez for Falter.
And Painter was on hand for a physical (nothing more) this past weekend. But he wanted to watch the games and brought his Dad. Love it.
Funny how our teams routinely run into dynasties in the championship round.
2001: 76ers v Lakers
1985: Flyers v Oilers
2004: Eagles v Pats
1980: 76ers v Lakers
1976: Flyers v Canadians
1987: Flyers v Oilers
1980: Flyers v Islanders
1993: Phillies v Blue Jays
1997: Flyers v Redwings
2010: Flyers v Blackhawks
2009: Phillies v Yankees
Only ones I can think of where we beat the dynasty was 2017: Eagles v Pats and 1983: 76ers v Lakers. I guess you could add in 1974: Flyers v Bruins since the Bruins won the Cup in 1970 and 1972.
The championships we won were otherwise against equal or lesser teams.
2008: Phillies v Rays
1980: Phillies v Royals
1975: Flyers v Sabres
1967: 76ers v Warriors
The one that still stings deeply was the 1980: Eagles v Raiders that we really should have won if we had played at all well.
