Well, we are through the Trade Deadline and Castellanos is still here (wasn't much doubt that they couldn't / wouldn't move him).

At this point I am willing to give him a reset and look upon his season as "in August, September and October". If he can pick things up he can still have a "when it really mattered" good season.

He is 0/0 so far this year. Hoping for .270 / .360 /.480.

Why Dfa Familia and Odubel so quickly? We have a few days to assign Marsh, Robertson, and Thor. Doesn't this leave us short while they travel to us?

Robertson will be there tomorrow. Marsh is traveling further so won't make the day game. They probably will wait for the Thor roster move.

Overall I am not really happy with the moves, but it could be worse, we kept the "big" prospects. Giving away O'Hoppe was just an extreme overpay for a guy that may not even be an upgrade

Marsh just isn't much of an upgrade. Honestly not even sure he is better than Odubel, but he doesn't come with the baggage.

They weren't short until they also traded Moniak.

In theory, DFAing immediately meant another team could have tried to trade for one of them too. But Herrera's black mark and Familia's salary made that unlikely.

Pretty sure he's an upgrade defensively, and he has upside, Herrara has been on a downward spiral.

Probably better for the clubhouse. It would be clear two people needed to go so why keep bad vibes for a few days. I think this was the way to go. On a personal level it sucks but best for the team.

Okay so now that the trade deadline is over will they DFA Didi for Segura or just option Munoz? I guess even without the sentiment/$ side of it you want to keep the extra body for at least a while.

Broadcasters talking about how much the clubhouse loved Familia. Thomson said it and they said Wheeler (who played with him before) said it and Amaro (who was also a Mets coach) confirming.

Odubel, otoh, was always an acquired taste for half of any clubhouse I think, with or without the allegations.

All in all, not bad for TDL moves.
2 solid prospects out, 1 former top prospect who is only 24 in, 1 player who has starter potential in at 26.
And the pitching depth was strengthened.

Marsh and Sosa definitely improve defense, at worst they're positive WAR just based on that, at best Long can "fix" them and turn them into potential starters (plus defenders as SS and CF don't have to mash, just get your OPS > .700)

Thor and Robertson buy a year for Falter, C Sanchez and Morales while improving their chances this season.
They probably need to bring back Gibson or Thor or their equivalent next year to buy time before the kiddie corp is ready.

Probably just tough logistically to get a player to Atlanta for 2 games. Maybe they should have just known Maton was less likely to be traded than Moniak.

If I am reading this correctly (some between the lines some not) the Phillies' main objective (while also being intrigued by Marsh long-term) is to try and lock down that 6th wild card by 2 or 3 games, as they need to the rotation to be set up to have any chance in the first round.

It also sounds like they only got Robertson because they didn't expect to get a starter, and then it worked out. Angels sent no $ or we might be talking about a higher price.

The top pitchers were not gettable without one of the Top 3 pitching prospects.

Robertson is activated so he must have gotten to Atlanta last night. They also brought up Muzziotti (who has had a very nice past week with several home runs) to fill the roster hole until Marsh gets here.

How many of the top pitchers available were better than Suarez if he's turned the corner since his return.
I mean Suarez was lights out last season, struggled the first half, but seems to have improved his command since he returned. When he's on, he's a pretty good pitcher. And a LH to boot.

You want to upgrade, but you want to be sure before you spend big, that the player is a significant upgrade and not more of what you already have (#3 starter).

It's a shame about Eflin's knee, he's been flirting with the next level for a couple years, but his knees seem to have deep sixed his career.

I think "the Phillies need a Game 3 starter" is kind of a false construct.

First they need enough pitching to actually win the wild card.

Second, they need to win it by 2-3 games so the rotation lines up.

And if both of those things happen, getting a great start out of one of the best version of Suarez, the best version of Gibson and Thor (with good rest/innings limit) is possible. If Eflin's back, bonus.

What "Game 3 starter" really means is someone you might trust to go through the order a third time, but in a clinching playoff series game I'm not sure there are many pitchers who would actually get to do that who aren't more like #1s. I hope the Phillies get that guy next season but getting one this season clearly a Catch-22 (i.e, "the Phillies aren't good enough to make that kind of trade" vs. "that kind of trade would make the Phillies good enough.")

That's kind of my point. Unless they were going to land a #1/#2 type, a slight upgrade over Suarez in a playoff series wasn't worth the huge payments asked for starters. Better to cross your fingers.
