Wow, I like the Edmundo Sosa pickup for the Phillies. Surprising move.

He’s a stellar glove who posted a 104 wRC+ in 2021 for the Cardinals — so his bat is not nothing.

He has no Minor League options left, so this is a MLB depth move. Interested to see the return.

His OPS was 210 points higher last year. Can he regain that? Ks up, BBs way down, HRs vanished. It's not bad BABIP luck that's pulled this guy down, it's a 3-true-outcomes deterioration. Pitchers figured him out or another fringe power victim of the humidor?

Might have been a realization that they'll need 40-man slots this week too and JoJo would have been lost. I just assume Stott's job is safe so he is just a defensive upgrade for Munoz. Maybe Camargo is still hurt too I guess. He just has not looked healthy running since he got back.

Yeah a marginal upgrade over Camargo or Munoz is not a big deal but still possibly worth doing. As andy mentioned in other thread would be nice if he replaces Didi (RH SS to pair with Stott) but he could also be a defensive replacement at 3B or 2B (especially if Didi get relegated to bench/PH).

I could still see them getting a LH reliever in which case Romero wasn't coming back up. They also might see Falter in that role yet.

I think Romero is a bit of an overpay here, unless Sosa's offensive stats rebound. Not earthshaking either way. Sosa's problem offensively is that he has never seen a pitch within two feet of the plate he doesn't want to swing at. His walk rates, even in the minors, are often below 5%.

I mean I don’t really see Romero being more than a middle reliever (6th inning type).

I could see Romero being a very good reliever but I think they also decided A) he can't help this year and B) he might not stick on the 40. Relievers are such a crapshoot I don't think it really matters (compared to giving up on starters, like Pivetta and Irvin).

I guess a defensive SS is a need, but I hate seeing late inning SS as a bench spot. For one thing I think it is hard to come into a game cold and play the most important position in fair territory, also it eats up a bench spot for yet another guy who can't hit.

Honestly I would rather have Romero.

And that explains why he went from starter quality in 2021 to sub-replacement in 2022 - pitchers realized he'd swing at anything and stop throwing him strikes.

Now if you could teach him to be more selective, he could be a very useful super sub.

Kyle Gibson will not start Tuesday in Atlanta. The Phillies will do a bullpen game. Zack Wheeler on Wednesday. Gibson’s grandmother passed away and he’s left the team to be with family.

On a personal note (which will I hope some will find amusing, others won't care) my first thought was that if Gibson was Jewish he could be back by Tuesday (because the funeral would be sooner) except of course that if he was observant he would actually miss two starts (because, shiva).

I see it as a good news/bad news kind of move. The good news is that this is unlikely to have an impact, but that's also the bad news.
